Biography

WISHBONE ASH BIOGRAPHY! !
The classic rock bands of the late ’60s and early ’70s enjoy a unique place in popular musical history. The Beatles had gone their separate ways, Britain had already experienced the Blues Boom, and Psychedelia had made its impact. The creative possibilities were infinite.

Wishbone Ash embarked on the nascent Progressive Rock scene in 1969, taking ... Read more in Amazon's Wishbone Ash Store

While as a classic lineup WA fan , I miss Ted and Martin (and even Laurie), I accept the fact that Powell is "the man" right now and he's done a pretty darn good job of keeping the classic WA sound at the fore. This album is no exception. The first track "Take it Back" has some interesting and catchy chord changes that remind one of why Powell was so important to the bands sound. "Deep Blues" is a solid number and "Being One" and "Way down South" are very listenable numbers as well. "Tally Ho" and "Blue Horizon" hit the mark for (if nothing else) being solid Andy Powell tracks. "All There is to Say" finishes off the album nicely. "American Century" to me is utter filler, but to each their own, I guess. AP really has done a pretty good job of making quality WA flavored stuff since the more classic lineups ceased. "Clan Destiny" is also a pretty solid album, and "Live in Geneva" is utterly smoking, if you haven't heard a live album from a newer version of WA.

The best Wishbone Ash album since Illuminations.

"Take It Back", written by Aynsley Powell, is a fine opener full of the key elements in Wishbone Ash's style. The lyrics are a gentle exhortation to never abandon the passions and creativity that fuel our youth - the writing is characterized by fine writing like the couplet "Deep down you did the digging/Tied tight all the rigging". Powell's nuanced vocal connects in equal parts with compassion and authority.

"Strange How Things Come Back Around", written by former Wishbone Ash guitarist Roger Filgate, is a wonderful acoustic-driven song with a tremendous "circular" arrangement, outside percussion, and a memorable conclusion.

"Way Down South" is a mature, moving AOR masterpiece. Powell's sensitive vocal conveys the dichotomy of weariness and longing to spectacular effect.

The band goes in for a bit of social critique on "Tally Ho!", but never overplays it with heavy-handed preachiness and the band tackles the shifting tempos with utter confidence.

"American Century", Aynsley Powell's second song on the album, is an ambitious, multi-sectioned song with a strong progressive flavor. The extended intro lays down the gauntlet and the band barrels through an impressive array of tempo changes with supreme confidence.

"Blue Horizon" is another ambitious, multi-sectioned tune in a progressive vein. It is impressive how Powell and Muddy Manninen weave their guitar parts around each other to create a cohesive tapestry of sound. Stunningly good from the first note to last.

I have been anticipating the newest by guitar masters Wishbone Ash and had already ordered the CD. Today I found that the MP3 version was available! Oh Happy Day!
Downloaded immediately and I have to say it is masterful. Wishbone Ash at their best, never a wrong note or so so song. All are everything I expect from them.

Well done! This will not disappoint either a long time fan or someone trying them out for the first time.

I've been a fan since the early seventies and they just refuse to back down. I read the startling reviews of Blue Horizon and must admit I was a bit skeptical that it could compare with their masterpiece Argus, but it does. OMG! The guitar work interplay from Andy and Muddy is just flat-out stunning! I won't bore you with a mini-review of each track, but "Deep Blues" and the title track "Blue Horizon" are not only as good and anything the band has ever produced, but ultimately stick-in-your-brain unforgettable! I can't get enough of this killer CD. Bravo Gentlemen, and while I am at it, thanks for the endless tour. See you in the Midwest US this fall! Can't wait!

I was a diehard Ash fan from '72 on but lost interest in the band by the 80's. They went through so many changes and sounds that they, in my opinion, lost that great sound from the first few albums. I've heard bits and pieces of Andy Powell's WA through the years and own a DVD or two. There were always flashes of the band I loved but not enough for me. Well, WA just came through town. I saw them in Lake Worth FL in a small club for the first time since 1977. To be honest I expected to enjoy a nostalgic night (they played the entire Live Dates Album) but not much more. I was very surprised and pleased. It was an outstanding show and really brought me back to the old sounds. I bought this CD at the show (Andy signed the cover!) and blasted it out in the car on the way home. To me this is the closest they have come to the original sound. I like almost every song here. Beautiful melodies, great guitar duos as usual, surprisingly good vocals from Powell. I'm sure any Ash fan would like this one.

I just have to say that this is an album for guitar and bass players. If you want to learn guitar, Wishbone Ash is the cleanest way to learn. Drummers are invited too.

Listen.

Listen to all the tracks and you'll discover a new world.

This album reflects the experience of a work of about four decades that you do not want to miss.I recommend to buy the CD to get all the information of the band and what instruments they play, if you are interested in gear. You also get the mp3's for free. But I doubt anyone can get this sound using the same gear. It is just how the play.

Just listen, learn, and enjoy of a wonderful work.
