Book Description

May 15, 2008
Most people think of Antarctica as a white smudge at the bottom of a world map, yet it--as a landmass almost the size of Africa with weather and ocean currents that dominate the planet. In Blue Ice, award-winning travel writing Don Pinnock journeys to the seventh continent -- the last to be discovered. He explores what drew Cook, Bellingshausen, Shackleton, Scott and other adventurers and naturalists to this vast terrain. With sensitive descriptions and startling photography, he travels into the heart of Antarctica's wilderness and explores the intimate relationship between Cape Town and the frozen south.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"What a beautiful book. The photographs will leave you breathless and the choice of the intriguing stories of travelers in Antarctica is flawless. Pinnock takes you on a journey across tempestuous seas, ice deserts, blizzards, blinding light and rivers of ice. I was mesmerised by the people and the place. The animals are also given story and picture time. There is a glossary of terms for the uninitiated. You will also find an Antarctic Chronology at the end of the book which I found useful as I have no real knowledge of Antarctica. I recommend this book... Amanda Patterson"

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, October 20, 2008
This review is from: Blue Ice: Travels in Antarctica (Paperback)
Blue Ice: Travels in Antarctica By Don Pinnock This is a fascinating book telling about Pinnock's dream trip of a lifetime coming to be. He journeyed from South Africa aboard an old ship as the official writer and photographer for an expedition to Antarctica and details his experiences in the white, frigid continent. He also tells in detail about the many expeditions and explorers who have failed or succeeded in past centuries in their exploits at the bottom of the earth. Pinnock writes in beautiful, descriptive language and his enthusiasm and passion for this unconquerable place make the reader both eager and fearful to make the same journey. A fascinating read!
