Product Description

Size: 120 Capsules

Many of the great historical cultures had one sacred food which they relied on to ensure strong mind, body, and spirit: Fermented fish/fish liver oil. The Mighty Roman Soldier was given a daily ration of fermented fish oil. The Stoic Scandinavian Viking had a drum of fermenting cod livers outside the door of his home. Grandma always had a bottle of cod liver oil in the back cupboard. Nutrient assays, including vitamins A and D, for our fermented oils vary widely depending on methodology, lab and batch. Current science struggles to answer the questions we have on our sacred fermented foods. There are many naturally occurring metabolites and co-factors that make the issue of measuring natural nutrients difficult in the fermented oils. We do know that historical cultures liberally consumed these sacred foods to great benefit without today's standardization of knowledge.

Before I bought this I tried Green Pasture's Fermented Cod Liver Oil/Butter Oil blend, in gel form. I have a really strong gag reflex and I just couldn't get it down.

I've read about the benefits of FCLO and Butter Oil, though, and I really wanted to be taking them, so I went ahead and ordered a bottle of orange flavor capsules, a bottle of unflavored capsules, and a bottle of butter oil capsules.

First of all, in case you don't realize, if you're taking capsules and you want to be taking 1 tsp per day (per WAPF guidelines), you need to take 8 of these capsules per day. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you need to be taking 16 capsules (2 tsp) per day. That means, if you want all of the benefits of FCLO, this bottle of 120 capsules will last you 7-15 days. If you can tolerate the flavor, the oil in liquid form is MUCH more economical.

So, here's my experience of these capsules: The capsules definitely are NOT odorless. When I take them, I wait until I'm eating something with a fairly strong flavor--lately, lasagna--then, I hold my breath, put three of these in my mouth, and drink water as quick as I can, and then immediately put a bite of food in my mouth. Sometimes I still gag on the capsules a little, and usually I taste the gross fish taste as they go down. Once in a while I have a fishy burp, which is absolutely disgusting. Overall, though, this process works for me, and I'm glad I've found a way to get the stuff down.

Compared to the orange flavored capsules: honestly, these unflavored ones have had a much milder flavor than the orange ones. The company claims that flavor really varies by batch, often just because of the fish's diet...that makes sense to me. So, I suspect I will continue to notice variation among different bottles.

If you are taking this product for dental health, I have to say it works! I had a rather annoying cavity and decided to try this product, along with Shilajit for the minerals. Absolutely wonderful! And in 6 weeks, my cavity was gone. Will be purchasing this again. My children even love it.

I was hesitant when I first ordered it because of the price, and I was also worry it would taste nasty. This product is great ! no after taste. No need for anti-depressants. It helps my mood perfectly. I can tell the difference when I forget to take them for a few days. It's worth the $. Great quality.

I went to a health expo with my mom and aunt some time ago and they talked about the health benefits of fermented Cod liver oil at length. It's especially great for women who want to keep their reproductive organs very healthy (regardless of whether you want kids one day or not). Also, it has many health benefits. Read below.

From BalanceBites.com

“Cod liver oil greatly improves heart function to prevent heart disease and to treat it even in advanced stages, after a heart attack and after heart surgery. Cod liver oil alters the linings of the arteries in such a way as to improve healing after damage. This is attributed to the omega-3 fatty acids but vitamin A, D and K all have important roles to play in facilitating mineral absorption, improving muscle function and supporting elasticity of the blood vessels. The inflammation-reducing prostaglandins made from EPA help mediate the inflammatory response in the arteries. In other studies the heart-protective effect was associated with changes in the muscle response to serotonin, increasing the heart’s ability to “relax.” In a study with rats, treatment with cod liver oil actually caused artery-blocking atheromas to become smaller and blood vessel diameter to enlarge.55 Weston Price noted that heart attack deaths increased during periods when the vitamin A content of the diet was low. Cod liver oil can provide vitamin A on a continuous basis throughout the year.”

Additionally…

Cod liver oil contributes to bone health, preventing bone and muscle pain and joint pain.
Vitamin-rich cod liver oil has been shown to support the health of pregnant women by improving the fatty acid profile of their breast milk to optimize brain health in the infant.

This supplement is amazing. I stopped taking it, and immediately broke out and had dark circles under my eyes. Immediately re-ordered and will be a customer for life. You don't realize how much your body needs something until it doesn't have it. You can put whatever you want on your skin to "anti-age" but if your body isn't getting what it needs internally it is a waste of time.

Amazon is selling this product at an unreasonably inflated price (40%-50% higher than if you buy it directly from Green Pastures). I used to buy it directly from Green Pastures and switched to purchasing it at Amazon a couple of years ago because, at the time, the price was comparable. I did notice the steep price increase at amazon lately and thought, with the recent popularity of taking fermented cod liver oil, the manufacturer may have increased the price and it slipped my mind to check the price at Green Pastures.

My recent order contained capsules that had strong fishy smell, which made me gag when I took them and my fingers were smelly afterwards. This had never happened before, therefore I started doing some research. The reason I buy capsules is to avoid the smell. My research took me back to the Green Pastures website and there I found that their pricing structure had never changed. In fact, they offer special discount if you buy 6 or more bottles of their products at the same time.

The difference in price is 40-50%. I would rather buy directly from the manufacturer, who are eager to help, have tons of helpful information at their website, and who can address issues if I have some. It seems to me that those selling at Amazon are buying in bulk from Green Pastures and reselling it here...and making quite a profit out of it, while not responsible for the content of the product. I would recommend buying directly from the manufacturer. Amazon should consider using more stringent price control so that its loyal customers do not get ripped off.
