Although Green's last novel, Shadow of Ashland (Forecasts, Jan. 8), was a poignant parable with a light fantasy gloss, his latest is anything but. Instead, it's a high-tech action cop thriller, albeit one sensitively drawn. In early-21st century Toronto, police officer Mitch Helwig survives?in rapid succession?the murder of his partner, an attempt on his own life, another attempt on the life of his boss, Captain Karoulis, and suspension from the force. To deal with the parties responsible, Helwig turns rogue cop, setting off a sequence of explosively paced confrontations. There's not much that makes this novel SF except for the futuristic hardware and Blue Limbo itself, a technique for partially reviving the dead that is used on Karoulis to provide Helwig with vital evidence. Both Helwig and Karoulis suffer some standard cop problems, but Green handles all his characters with great compassion. Then there is Mitch's octogenarian father, Paul, a man of wit, courage and resources unsuspected by even his son, let alone the villains. Green's newest may be short on originality, but it's definitely long on readability.

Except for some high-tech weapons and the medical breakthrough of reviving dead people for a maximum of four weeks (known as the "blue limbo"), very little of this book could be considered science fiction. It's more like one step into the future for Joseph Wambaugh. This crime thriller will appeal to fans of Sylvester Stallone's futuristic movies. Recommended for crime fiction and sf collections.

Well, I would not give it a 4, but hey. I am not much for sci-fi, but I am an opened minded person. The book was not that hard to belive, though I wonder if Green got money for using all those plugs for the products in the book. It was O.k. just dont expect to much from it.It will pa...ss the time

Voracious reading, with a heart & soul!,

Hard-boiled crime drama in the 21st century. I was pleasantly surprised how well it drew me in, since I generally prefer far future SF. Green starts the action from the get go, and his crisp straight-forward writing made my eyes hungrily consume the pages. He also managed to give the story a strong character focus, instead of relying on non-stop action. While the SF element of the book spotlights the effects on society of the introduction of the first sort-of successful revival of the dead from cryonic suspention, the heart & soul of the drama shows the troubles in life for those that are the "thin blue line", showing that tomorrow's tomorrow may not be so different than today. Technology grows and changes, but people are people.

for a very short book, blue limbo is packed with emotion and adventure. terence green is a writer to watch. the characters are very real, i could feel the pain in mitch helwig when he split up with his ex-wife. i would highly recommend this book to fans of science fiction and people who dont read sci-fi books. i hope the paperback edition does well for mr. green. jim sbicca
