This is one of the better, high-SPF formulas around for chemically-sensitive and health-conscious users. But, it is not exactly "pristine" in its ingredient list as the base lotion contains many synthetic chemicals. Additionally, not all the Blue Lizard formulas are the same as far as "active" sunscreen agents. Out of all the Blue Lizard sunscreens, the "Sensitive formula" and "Baby Lotion" have the least added UV-absorbing, synthetically-made chemicals. Some of these typical sunscreen chemicals (methoxycinnamate, benzophenone, homosalate, octinate) are suspected for potential adverse health affects. Certainly, they are not "organic," "natural" or "pure" - they are synthetic chemical derived in a lab and have a high photoactivity that is not desirable for health reasons. The other Blue Lizard formulas use these as "active ingredients" for suncreening which rely on absorbing UV light to achieve the SPF rating.

In contrast, this Blue Lizard "Sensitive" formula achieves it's very high protection factor (SPF 30+) using much more inert, mineral pigments (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide). These materials mostly REFLECT light to achieve high SPF (which is better than absorbing light as the synthetic chemicals do). These pigments are added into the lotion base and carefully dispersed into a super-fine particle size ("micronization"). At these finer particle sizes, the effectiveness is much greater, giving high UV protection without that famous "white nose look" sported by many a lifeguard (that resulted from more "course" dispersions of zinc oxide). But, because of these whitening agents, this product will still can leave a slight pale cast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper at Walgreens March 19, 2011
By Kris
Blue Lizard (Sensitive) is all I use anymore; it's the best sunblock product on the market at a reasonable price. Was recommended to me by my dermatologist who is a specialist in skin cancer and as a skin cancer survivor... I listen closely to everything he tells me. Your suncreen/block MUST have titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, both, to be worthwhile! The only reason I'm writing this review is that the price here at Amazon of $27 is outrageous.... you can get it all day long online at Walgreens for $15, same 5oz size...and, if you watch closely at Walgreens online, they'll have it on sale soon..later this month (Mar) or next (Apr) for $10/bottle - that's when I stock up on it for the season.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for allergic people April 21, 2011
My son, who is 6, is allergic to most sunscreen. His reaction is that if I put regular sunscreen (even PABA free) on him, and he is exposed to sunlight, the exposed skin breaks out into a rash with tiny pinpoint bumps and his face swells, gets red and hot, like a severe sunburn. Eventually it will dry out and peel. It takes days of Benadryl and cortisone topical to get him comfortable again. It's awful. And he's a fair skinned redhead, so not having sunscreen is not an option for us.

This sunscreen, Blue Lizard Sensitive, worked great for him. No reaction at all. No sunburn either. What more can you ask for?

I used it on myself as well. It goes on almost, but not quite clear. There is still a white color there, though it's thin. It dries to a non-greasy finish. So, you don't feel all gooped up all day. It seems to stay on for quite a while. I didn't shower until the next morning, and it still felt like it was on my skin when I got it wet, I had to wash it off with soap. So, it seems to be pretty good at lasting.

We spent the afternoon in the direct sun with this stuff on and neither of us got a sunburn and we only applied it once.

If you are allergic to sunscreen, this is a safe bet. It works well, and didn't cause a reaction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good sunscreen for sensitive skin. July 9, 2010

This is one of the few sunscreens I can use without breaking out in an itchy rash. It works well but I wish it came in SPF 60 or higher. Otherwise it's very good. I used to use Fallene Total Block SPF 65 clear. It was wonderful and I could use it without an allergic reaction, but they've changed the formula this year and when I used it recently I got a sunburn after only an hour of playing tennis.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works well! September 17, 2010

I love this sunscreen. I've tried many different sunscreens over the years, and our family will probably stick with this one. No one seems to be sensitive or allergic to it, and it gives us great sun protection. I love how the bottle turns blue in UV light.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not at all what I was hoping for July 8, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I have been using a similar product, with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide as the sunblocking agents, but I don't care much for its strong scent. So, after reading all the positive reviews of the Blue Lizard sunscreens I decided to give the fragrance free version a try. Maybe it works well for some people, but for me this sunscreen is extremely greasy and did not protect my skin from the sun. With it as greasy as it was, even after drying it off then re-applying more before going outside, it felt to me like my now shiny-oily skin actually attracted the sun instead of blocking it! I might as well have gone outside with no sunscreen on at all. I am very surprised and disappointed that I didn't like this product better, especially considering the cost.
