Two contrasting albums, April 4, 2003
This review is from: Blue Gene/Meets the Fair Young Ladies of Folkland (Audio CD)
The first album that makes up this twofer, Blue Gene, contains the kind of songs you expect to find on a Gene Pitney album. It opens with Twenty-four hours from Tulsa, a top 20 USA hit that was a much bigger hit in the UK. The title track was never released as a single in Britain or America - indeed, the only other single taken off the album in either country was Yesterday's hero, which became a minor hit in the USA but was not released in Britain as a single.
The remaining tracks on the Blue Gene include a mixture of contemporary songs and covers of older songs. Autumn leaves, a song of French origin, has been covered many times and is, of course, a classic. Answer me my love was a hit for several singers in the fifties including Frankie Laine. It was revived in the seventies by the much under-rated Scottish singer Barbara Dickson, who had a top ten hit with it.
The bonus track, That girl belongs to yesterday, was a top ten hit in the UK but only a minor hit in the USA. The single version here differs from the album version included on another CD in this series.
There is no other Gene Pitney album anything like the second album here - Gene Pitney meets the fair ladies of folk land. It comprises thirteen songs about various ladies, all recorded in a folk style. The album was released while Blue Gene was still selling well but no single was released and it seems that no serious effort was made to promote it. Because of my eclectic tastes, I enjoy it just as much as Gene's other music, but I can imagine that some of Gene's fans will not like this at all. It really depends whether you like folk music or not.

Blue Gene/Folkland Review, August 15, 2001
This review is from: Blue Gene/Meets the Fair Young Ladies of Folkland (Audio CD)
There is no doubt in my mind that Gene Pitney could have picked any area of music and made a career out of it! He sings these folk songs as well as any folk artist, but he does it with more feeling and passion as usual. I also loved the songs of the Blue Gene album. Again, I never tire of listening to him sing. This is a great CD.
