Format: Audio CD
The first album that makes up this twofer, Blue Gene, contains the kind of songs you expect to find on a Gene Pitney album. It opens with Twenty-four hours from Tulsa, a top 20 USA hit that was a much bigger hit in the UK. The title track was never released as a single in Britain or America - indeed, the only other single taken off the album in either country was Yesterday's hero, which became a minor hit in the USA but was not released in Britain as a single.

The remaining tracks on the Blue Gene include a mixture of contemporary songs and covers of older songs. Autumn leaves, a song of French origin, has been covered many times and is, of course, a classic. Answer me my love was a hit for several singers in the fifties including Frankie Laine. It was revived in the seventies by the much under-rated Scottish singer Barbara Dickson, who had a top ten hit with it.

The bonus track, That girl belongs to yesterday, was a top ten hit in the UK but only a minor hit in the USA. The single version here differs from the album version included on another CD in this series.

There is no other Gene Pitney album anything like the second album here - Gene Pitney meets the fair ladies of folk land. It comprises thirteen songs about various ladies, all recorded in a folk style. The album was released while Blue Gene was still selling well but no single was released and it seems that no serious effort was made to promote it. Because of my eclectic tastes, I enjoy it just as much as Gene's other music, but I can imagine that some of Gene's fans will not like this at all. It really depends whether you like folk music or not.

I actually had all the other songs from Gene Pitney's many CD's that I consider Important to save for future listening pleasure ect. However I want to say that CDZONE is a company I will do business with again,,,you get what you want at unbeatable prices coupled with the excellent on time shipping. I'm very careful and critical or people I purchase from on line and I tell it like it is...This company is First Rate all the way.

There is no doubt in my mind that Gene Pitney could have picked any area of music and made a career out of it! He sings these folk songs as well as any folk artist, but he does it with more feeling and passion as usual. I also loved the songs of the Blue Gene album. Again, I never tire of listening to him sing. This is a great CD.

I rate this 4 stars because I enjoy very much the pop/rock songs included in the album "Blue Gene" as Take It Like A Man, his classic hits Yesterday's Hero and 24 Hours From Tulsa, and the bonus track That Girl Belongs To Yesterday. I like very much that kind of songs in the voice of Gene Pitney. "Gene Meets The Fair Young Ladies ..." is different, a conceptual album, country oriented, which I don't find very interesting.

I've been collecting different CD's of Gene's trying to get as many of his "Blue Gene" songs as possible. Voted the all time favorite album by the Gene Pitney fan club, a must for anyone who listens to Gene Pitney.

I was very excited to find this dual album, since I had searched quite a while for anything containing the rather obscure "Laurie" and "Oh, Annie, Oh." Although I like nearly everything he's released in the U.S., these two songs are my very favorites, and their original album, "Gene Pitney's More Big Sixteen" is nowhere to be found in CD media. "Gene Meets the Fair Young Ladies" has several more quiet, lilting heartbreakers, matching them well in mood and tone. Not being a fan of country music, I wouldn't classify them in that genre; they are rather more folk/mountain ballad. "Blue Gene" includes many of his more well-known rock favorites; together these albums show off his incredible versatility and heart-stopping vocal power.
