Focus on Performance, Not on Recording

Nessie takes the fear out of great recording by instantly delivering studio-enhanced sound for desktop recording of vocals, instruments, voiceovers and more.

Built-in Pop Filter and Internal Shockmount

Designed to combat the most common pitfalls of recording, Nessie automatically adapts to whatever you're recording, applying professional studio processing combined with a built-in pop filter and internal shockmount, to produce expertly finished sound, without the need for additional mixing or editing.

The built-in, studio-grade pop filter and shockmount reduce harsh plosives and disruptive rumbling and vibrations, while the adaptive processing, including EQ, de-esser and level control, automatically smoothes and refines your audio in real time.

Instantly Polished Results

Just as the latest point-and-shoot cameras will reduce redeye and automatically adjust focus and exposure for improved photos, Nessie professionally enhances audio so that you get polished music demos, podcasts, interviews, YouTube broadcasts and more, instantly!

Three Flexible Recording Modes

Nessie's three flexible recording modes are optimized for richer vocals, more detailed instruments or an option for raw audio for manual post-production editing. Nessie employs a single custom-tuned condenser capsule with a cardioid pattern.

Zero-Latency Headphone Output

Nessie features a zero-latency headphone output for direct monitoring, which is critical for eliminating distracting delay, while headphone volume and instant mute are located directly on the microphone.

Flexibility and Easy Plug-and-Play

For optimal positioning, Nessie's head adjusts with serpentine flexibility. Nessie is plug-and-play compatible via USB with both PC and Mac with driverless installation. For mobile recording, you can connect to iPad using Apple's Lightning Adapter and a powered USB hub, both sold separately.

Customer Questions & Answers

It has a slightly retro look which looks really nice.
Kate
To my ear, the Nessie adds some compression to the signal when set to Voice, but not enough to be too distracting.
Justin Opinion
The gain was great after that, exactly what you'd expect from a condenser mic.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )

The Blue Nessie is a joy to use, despite my very limited knowledge of audio recording. Compared to my PC's built-in webcam mic it's night and day. But what surprised me the most was how it smooth the recording was even in a room with screaming kids. It instinctively focused on the sounds in close proximity of the mic while filtering out background noise, breathing, or desk vibrations. I compared it to the audio from my Zoom ZH1 Handy Portable Digital Recorder (see video) and while they both added fullness to my voice the Zoom's auto-gain sometimes went too hot and it picked up all of the background sounds (which may be useful if you're recording the background).

The design is also very attractive however despite all the chrome and metallic finish it is mostly plastic other than the weighted base. I don't see any problems with this since all the plastic is very strong and well made and it probably keeps the weight and price down, but it's worth mentioning. I have a couple of friends with the Blue Microphones Yeti USB Microphone - Silver Edition, and while it seems more versatile with it's multiple pick-up patterns, for single person recording I would choose the Nessie every time for it's drop dead simple capability to create clean audio. The mute button is touch sensitive and not a physical button, which is nice so that it won't pick up a click sound when you press/depress it.

So, to get the first thing out of the way; the floppy head.

I bought mine at the Apple Store and yes, it came with the 'floppy' head. I reached out to Blue support and they advised me that I could either A) return it, B) submit it for service, or C) tighten it with a T10x60 torque head.

I opted for option C) and it took no time at all. However, it seems in bad form that they are shipping it in this condition and incurring a lot of customer wrath as well as returns.

To level set what my setup is, I have a small recording studio in my home for podcasting and voiceovers. My equipment: Tascam 144a USB mixer, Rode NT1A, Studio Projects C3, Blue Yeti, and now Blue Nessie.

I use the Tascam when I need to mic a voice and an instrument. However, I also like the simplicity of a USB mic when I'm just doing podcasting or voiceover work.

I do very little instrumental stuff, so any time I talk about quality it is primarily about voice.

I've seen a couple of people complaining about low gain... it seems that when the USB driver loads for this device it sets itself to medium on the volume side of things. I was recording with Audacity and I just had to go under the covers and got it all working. The gain was great after that, exactly what you'd expect from a condenser mic.

In terms of the quality, I find it to be very good. Like with any condenser mic, you are only as good as your room. If you set the Nessie on the desk and talk sitting up, you'll have to up the gain enough to pick up the ambient noise of your room. If you turn it down and want to talk close to the mic, you'll need to put the Nessie up on some books or some other arrangement.

Verified Purchase
The product does what you'd expect. It records a decent sound, can manipulate the sound without being too 'techy' and difficult to understand. It sacrifices a lot of control in exchange for ease of use.

I feel that that the "yeti" by the same company is clearly a much superior product especially since its in the same price range. It allows more hands on control, but doesnt truly require it. If you're willing to spend a little time learning your new piece of hardware I highly recommend that item instead.

That said, if you're a novice and you're looking for an entry level mic with some very decent quality and you're unwilling to adapt to a new piece of hardware like the Yeti this mic might be for you. its definately a 'plug and play' microphone.

Two concerns beyond that:

The sound quality is not as nice as my yeti. It does sound a bit muted. To the novice ear this will still sound perfectly fine and I admit that with instruments the sound is very, very good. But the design does create a muted quality.

The design of the stand and the microphone itself is poor. I've had several issues trying to get it to 'stay in place' when I'm trying to point my microphone. Movement of the mic can often cause it to fall out of position.

Still its a very nice portable microphone. I bought it for this purpose as I found carrying my yeti on a plane to be cumbersome and difficult. Its good enough for when I want to record a video on the road and is fairly compact for this purpose.

Overall, not a bad purchase... just not a great one. If you're looking for something for your in-home studio, I recommend the Yeti by blue instead.
