The sounds of an era, recaptured, in a slightly silly way...,
This review is from: Blue Moo (Audio CD)
This almost-flawless collection has become the surprise hit of the year with our 3.5-year-old. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised, as other Boynton albums, like Rhinoceros Tap, have also become instant classics with our other children.
Almost all the songs are hummable from the very first listen and many will bring a smile to your face over and over (for me, it's the Uninvited Loud Precision Band - "the best intruding band in all the land"). It's also a delight hearing the still-powerful stylings of some of the well-known singers of the 50s and 60s (even though I was too young to hear them the first time around). Brian Wilson's "Speed Turtle" is an instant classic that you won't be able to get out of your head. I continue to be perplexed by the inclusion of "Big Band Sound" featuring a monotonous delivery by Five For Fighting's John Ondrasik (maybe I'm culturally out of it, but I had never heard of them, or him, before this album). However, this album flows so beautifully that I can forgive this one hiccup (and my daughter seems, oddly, to like the song). If you like the album or want to know more about it, there's a cute 10-minute "making of" video on YouTube if you search for Boynton, that will not only give you more insight into the process behind a book/album like this but also show clips of the singers actually belting out their tunes. Kudos to Boynton and Ford for realizing kids need real music, too. And on the side, a helping of deliciously droll Boynton cows, rabbits, hippos, penguins and other critters. Highly recommended!

BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER!!! Even DADDY can stand it!!,
By AMERICAN FIREFIGHTER AUCTIONS (TEXAS, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Moo (Audio CD)
Ok I am a Dad in my 20's, I was looking for music for my 15 month old... Maybe it is just me, but after a million baby genius songs I have come to the conclusion that most of the "modern" kids music was actually designed to make small children even stupider... This Blue Moo CD is AWESOME!! I can stand it - I mean LIKE it! And I er.. kids will love it, my kid had an almost INSTANT smile when I turned it on... It uses adult voices that are not actually talking WAYYY down to a child, but are still are fun! This CD took talent to make, and will let your kid be a kid - and your child won't be any dumber for listening :P - Anyway's I'm done with this review - I'm gonna go crank this up and go jump around in my kids room now...

Boynton scores again! (pun intended),

Along with "Philadelphia Chickens" and "Dog Train," "Blue Moo" is a truly remarkable collection of songs. So much kids' music is just silly, but in Boynton's choices (and performers!) kids are entertained and adults are engaged rather than patiently tolerant. It's good music. B.B. King's 'One Shoe Blues' is worth the price of the CD, in my opinion.
