Used for a costume and it worked great!

The driver makes a high pitch noise when it's turned on, but it's not really possible to hear unless the room is quiet.

The packaging is small, the wire was coiled in a 2" roll. The battery pack uses 2 AA's and is simple to open and close. The battery pack has a LED light next to the on/off button to indicate the mode. The flashing LED matches the pattern of the wire; steady, strobe, flash. The connectors between the battery pack and el-wire are small and not very durable. It took a little fidgeting to get them plugged together, but if you treat them like any other small electronic part, you'll be ok.

The el-wire feels like fish tank tubing, and has a small plastic cap at the end. It is flexible and bends easily, even though I didn't see how far it could bend and possibly breaking it. The glow is evenly smooth for the entire length of the wire.

It glows bright in a dark room, can be seen ok in a dim lit room, and will be virtually undistinguishable in a well lit place or daylight. The strobe setting is more like a fast on/off mode, strobing about 6 times second. The flash mode flashes once per second.

My daughter wanted to be a Water Bender (the girl from the movie, Avatar, The Last Airbender). Wifeypoo made the costume, and I used this wire to create a swirl of blue water around her. Using 9 feet of 14-gauge wire from the hardware store (about the thickness of a coffee stir straw), and using clear scotch tape, I taped the el-wire to the coil of 14-gauge wire. There was enough at the top to make a small swirl, with the battery pack clipping to her collar behind her head. The wire is attached to her right shoulder, goes behind her back attaching to her left hip, continues across the front, and goes behind her again eventually stopping at her left leg. Sort of a swirl-of-water-bending-around-her effect.

This is a very simple light, like those glow wrist bands they sell at carnivals and theme parks, except this lasts as long as your AA batteries can go. It does make an electronic noise that can get annoying in quiet environments. Watch my video to hear the sound.

Lit my bike up like a neon sign. Extremely helpful for those dusty dessert nights.

I bought 2 of these, I was not sure where or how I would use them on my wheelchair. Turns out that 9 feet goes from the upright seat back supports, around the folding joint of the seat back to along the side of the frame, and the solid seat pan. From here it follows the frame down the front leg, and around the back of the foot rest, then back up the other frame leg, and along the same path as the first side minus going up the seat back upright, it terminates at the power supply at this point.

I one of these going >>>>>>>>>> around the chair frame as to create a Tron sort of effect with two of the light wires over each other around the chair.
<<<<<<<<<<

I positioned the power supplies to the right and left of my seat back right about where my flanks are on my back. The amount of force that the seat back receives from my daily use caused one of the EL wires to break connection right at the standard wire to the El Wire connection. It too some patient wire stripping, and little reading online how to work with this cool wire. But, about 7 inches later I was able to get the center wire, and the two outer thin thread like wires to expose enough for me to connect a new length of standard wire to allow for stress relief on the connection to the EL Wire. I used a technique that did not require any solder to connect these together with. And, wrapped it with electrical tape, and zip tied a sturdy plastic case around the repair, and wrapped that with some more E-Tape. The connection sounds like it would be huge, it is not much bigger in diameter than the original connection point was.

One warning - DO NOT allow when in repair mode, the power pack to connect with your skin. You will be zapped.

I do not recommend using this item for a bike. It did not work well from the outset though.

I constantly have to open the unit to move the batteries around to make sure the connections are touching because the light does not work.

For $5.99 this EL wire is a bargain. The 9ft. strand is pretty typical length. I use a lot of EL wire for clothing projects and washing the clothes is a problem when you cannot remove the battery pack. These units are built with a quick connect, which is a nice feature to remove the battery pack. The controller is cheap, but it's only $5.99. If you want durability, pay the big bucks for units designed for bicycles and rain. I use these units in the harsh desert environment of Burning Man and they hold up well. Anyone who has ever used EL wire knows that the controllers buzz/whine, some more loudly than others. Unless you are a loner, sitting in a dark insulated room by yourself, you are not going to hear this unit in any normal social situation. A room fan can drown out the noise of the controller. I gave it 4/5 stars because the controller case is pretty cheap construction.

I bought this one thinking it would be the same as the 10 ft EL wire, and also because it was slightly cheaper. Never again. While it does work just fine, it's not nearly as bright as the 10 ft one I bought previously. I would say it's somewhere around 70-80% the brightness. I'm not sure if its the outer sheath or the luminescent wire inside that's causing this lack of brightness, but whatever the case, I'll be spending the extra dollar or two next time and buying the 10 footer.

Another side note, the positive and negative wires on this one weren't marked, which made putting multiple strands in parallel slightly more troublesome. I minor inconvenience, but I thought I should just point it out.
