4.0 out of 5 stars Southern Soul for the 90's
As good as southern soul got in the 90's. The recording was crisp, clean and uncluttered. The bass guitar popped, the drums snapped and the guitars were soulful. The band found a groove and held onto it throughout the session. Percy was in good voice. He sounded involved and like the 40 year + professional that he is. That's what you look for in a good soul album...

3.0 out of 5 stars Soul Man still Soul-full
Like his other unknown album Shining Thru the Rain, Percy proves he is still the soul man that can bring the soul as it was meant to be not like today's voice inhanced phoneys. Pure soul from the heart and sadly he is still being overlooked by the entertainment world and this CD does have some highs and lows but still better than any of todays singers efforts. You Got A...

By the way, when I listened to this cd for the first time (winter of 2003), I was shocked by how similar Percy Sledge' s voice and style on this cd iss to John Hiatt's at his best. This is good stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars everlasting soul, August 10, 2004

Aussie Soulman (Melbourne, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Night (Audio CD)
In recent years we have been blessed with some magnificent returns to form by R&B/Soul legends -- Howard Tate, Solomon Burke and Al Green head the list. But it was a decade ago that I chanced on this CD and was stunned and delighted to find one of the Olympians of sixties soul -- the man who blessed us with When A Man Loves A Woman and It Tears Me Up -- had resurfaced. Better still that voice was still heavenly, still capable of sending a tremor of pleasure up your spine; the song choice was impeccable; the backing top-notch. Somehow though, I suspect, this one has been allowed to slip under too many people's radar. Anyone who loves classic deep soul and emotion-drenched singing (from the soul)should track this down. You owe it to yourself.

3.0 out of 5 stars Soul Man still Soul-full, September 3, 2010

Like his other unknown album Shining Thru the Rain, Percy proves he is still the soul man that can bring the soul as it was meant to be not like today's voice inhanced phoneys. Pure soul from the heart and sadly he is still being overlooked by the entertainment world and this CD does have some highs and lows but still better than any of todays singers efforts. You Got A Way With Love feels like Motown and the groove is both modern and retro at the same time. Love Come Knockin' is a feel good dance number with that Percy touch. Why Did You Stop? is an excellent soulful rendition of style of the classic Percy Sledge and what makes Percy the Soul man he still is today. The re-makes of I wish It Would Rain and Dreams To Remember are smooth and given the Percy treatment. Blue Night has an eerie feel as lonely as a man facing the darkness alone with thoughts of lost love echoing in his head while his heart silently breaks. As usual there are two songs or so that could have been better and he could have chosen many other songs in thier place making this CD not up to par with Shining thru The Rain but still soul-full enough to have in any true soul collectors collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars If you like the sound..., August 12, 2006
This review is from: Blue Night (Audio CD)
This a fine album.

Of course I've known the music of Percy Sledge since the sixties but I just (very happily) re-discovered him in the past few months. I bought one of the "Best of ..." collections and then "Shining through the Night." (Also very good....better even than this one.)

I finally found "Blue Night" in a used CD store. (For some reason the album is not on iTunes.) But what a delight it is!

If you like the Percey Sledge "sound" you will like "Blue NIght." I am not schooled in music so I don't know what else to say. But I like this album a great deal and I wish he had recorded more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Definately no his best work,, August 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Night (Audio CD)
This is definately not some of his best work. It does not have the beat or the feelings that he so carefully and whole heartedly put into his earlier albums.I am a long time fan Percy Sledge and can remember my Mother listening to his music back in the day, 30 some odd years ago. He's an artist that knows what to say when someone is suffering from a broken heart that nothing can heal but the warmth and tenderess of the person they are longing for.
