A great first jazz album, one of the best jazz compilations, September 9, 2001

Im thrilled to write the first review of this album. I first got introduced to jazz through this album. The first cd is some of the earlier hard-bop recordings, some of the more melodic funky ideas, and the second cd leaning towards the more avant garde post bop ideas, its not avant garde, but melodiclly freer.
All the songs were picked thoughtfully, and its a treat to listen to both of these cds through, even though i have a huge jazz collection, this compilation is just a great overall purchase, perfect for anyone remotely into jazz.
Dont hesitate, and buy this if your wanting 2 great cds of music you can listen to over and over.

If you have not yet developed an ear for the avant garde and consider the big band swing a bit old fashioned; than this is exactly where you need to begin. This is a great set list by the best talent that world of jazz had to offer. This is hot and tempermental riffing. Once you get these grooves under your skin, then you can reach even further back into the America's past or explore the places where you thought your ears would never go.
