4.0 out of 5 stars a buffet of soul, February 14, 2001
This review is from: Blue Note Years 3: Organ & Soul 1956-1967 (Audio CD)
this compilation consists mostly of 60's era organ combos. It is a good place to get acquainted with the different contributors to this era in blue note's history. From here you will be better able to seek out the individual artists that catch your ear and delve deeper into a most enjoyable period of american music. While the tunes are creative, they rarely deviate from the 12-bar blues and can be a bit monotomous after a time. Gems include Jimmy Smith's "THE SERMON" and the essential "SIDEWINDER" from Lee Morgan. Overall, the set serves as a fine launching pad for this era of jazz.
