My son is too young to fully understand the concept of the game, but with my help and instruction, we can get through a short game. It's been really good for teaching him about numbers and balance, and also for teaching the basic concept of taking turns during a game. The hardest part, for him, is following the "directions" that rolling the die gives you. He wants to execute his own stacking plan.
But that makes this game a good toy as well. My son will often ask for "Elephant Game!" just to practice stacking and rolling the die -- it can keep him entertained for quite a long time.
This isn't a game that'll be fun for years and years... I'm sure kids will outgrow it before they enter school. But it's a great introduction to games for little ones, a good starting point.
So you roll the die and follow the directions. You can stack up or sideways. But you can't stack UNDER where the last person put their pieces. So once you start stacking one column, you are almost stuck until someone places a bar that can carry more characters.
The jokers and bars can be added in any order. But the elephants all have to be stacked numerically. Whoever stacks the tenth elephant without knocking over the tower wins.
A few adults playing would have no problem, but kids sure do add to the difficulty of making a sturdy tower of balancing elephants! The wooden pieces can be added standing up on their legs or upside down. It's fun to try different designs as you stack.
I think the wooden characters are adorable. They are well-painted and durable. Overall, a great game for kids that requires no batteries and lots of ingenuity.
Another awesome Blue Orange game is Pengoloo. We love it!
