5.0 out of 5 stars Useful guide to where companies stand
An excellent reference guide, even more useful than I expected. The Blue Pages not only tells where corporate political contributions go, but it also gives a paragraph on each company detailing things such as law suits, labor relations, OSHA violations, and whether they have anti-discrimination policies on sexual orientation or gender identity.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pocket guide to the political economy
I picked this up at the airport while waiting for a flight. The titled "The Blue Pages", it does not lean liberal in any way. It provides a short and concise breakdown of political contributions of the biggest companies operating in the US. The companies are broken down into industries, with one chapter for each industry such as automotive, computers and electronics,...

Some companies of interest at first appeared not to be listed, but they I discovered they are in the index, and the index points to parent companies, or, in some cases, a subsidiary company.

I would encourange anybody who cares how their spending influences politics to buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shopping will never be the same, February 11, 2006
This review is from: The Blue Pages: A Directory of Companies Rated by Their Politics and Practices (Paperback)
I am going to recommend this book to all of my friends. I was curious about the book after reading about it on the Daily Kos. I wanted to see for myself what all the hoopla was about. I examined THE BLUE PAGES and Buyblue.org. One is a book and the other is a website. I have to say that they really don't share very much in common. Buyblue is a blog with a limited amount of listings. As a blog Buyblue.org is very useful but their listing are very limited. THE BLUE PAGES on the other hand has lots of listings. I say use both of them and stop all of this progressive in fighting. As progressives we have a lot more important work to do. We need to spend our money with companies that share our politics. I going to take THE BLUE PAGES with me whenever I go shopping.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Book for Shareholder & Consumer Activism, March 8, 2006
This review is from: The Blue Pages: A Directory of Companies Rated by Their Politics and Practices (Paperback)
Consumer and shareholder activism is one of the few channels that everyday people (regardless of political persuasion; or particular single interest) have open.

The assumption that any given corporation will act in the interest of the shareholder, let alone the consumer is very unsafe. This book provides a handy reference for a consumer, or investor to make a more informed decision.

I found the information on current activities, issues and ethical valuations to be very helpful and generally up to date.

From an entirely personal perspective I dislike Companies that make sizable donations to any party, have "well funded" PAC's and profit from the suffering of others - in some instances it is more questionable when companies are making million dollar contributions to both parties. The simple proportion of democrat to republican has to be read with care (e.g. company shown as 100 percent republican with a 5000 donation). A symbol to highlight the big donors would be very helpful.

This book will have a short life given it's nature; I hope there will be annual updates.

I just picked up a copy of THE BLUE PAGES after reading all the buzz on the Daily Kos. This book is filled with lots of useful information. Who knew that Anthropology was 100% Democratic. Gotta love that! Shopping will never be the same. I am definitely going to use this book to vote with my dollars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spending Smarter - let your dollars be heard, November 11, 2009
This book gives you great insight into how companies lobby and contribute their profits to politicians, and it also provides information on litigation, settlements and humanitarian causes that are associated with that business.

If you want your hard earned money to be directed to positive areas, with companies who use their money in a fair and balanced way, then this knowledge is power, and shopping is a fact of life. A tool to help align yopurself with companies who have the same interests, ethics and values. This book assists by giving key information in a concise and easy to read format, the index makes the search so quick and easy - it fits in your purse!

It is surprising to find how much money is dropped into the political coffers by some of these companies, without regard for public good, but personal lobby gain. It is truly enlightening, and this book now assists me in making decisions to stop doing business with entities that I determine are conducting themselves outside the scope of the morality, ethics and values I hold dear.

This book is easy to use, well worth referring to often (mine is in my glove compartment, and easily switched to my purse). People have the power to control where their money goes long after you leave the store or pay the bill, so it pays to be well armed with information. Know that when you shop, when you spend your money with a particular merchant, retailer, restaurant, investor etc. you are controlling and contributing to what is important and valued by 'you'.

When you go shopping for stuff, this book tells you up front how the company stands politically, which party it supports and how much, plus background information on the company's labor and environmental policies. It covers everything from running shoes to brake shoes. Whatever you spend your money on, it's in this pocket-size book: cars, clothes, computers, insurance, financial, food and beverage, health and beauty, home and garden, media and entertainment, telecommunications and Internet, travel and leisure. I especially like the top-ten lists at the start of each chapter, so I know right away who the good guys and bad guys are.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, November 11, 2009
This has been an excellent tool during my studies and revealed how companies are interacting in our political system. A must have for those involved in Political Science or who want to know about more about how companies are intertwined in the political process. Very surprising! A++

5.0 out of 5 stars Full of useful information!, November 12, 2009

This is a fantastic resource for determining a company's political and social stance. If you are someone like me who does not like to spend my money at stores who have policies and support causes that are contrary to my view, you now have a one-stop resource to figure things out. For example, did you know that Amazon has a program that lists the best green products they offer? Or that they have outreach for literacy programs and disaster relif? They also offer health insurance coverage to employees' domestic partners. I didn't know that either, but now I do! This book is awesome!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Blue Pages: A Directory of Companies Rated by Their Politics and Practices (Paperback)
This guide provides an excellent overview of companies political contributions and policies. Useful regardless of your political leanings. Language appears to be non-biased. Some items were rather refreshing to find, and other companies were rather shocking. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable information at your fingertips, February 10, 2006
This review is from: The Blue Pages: A Directory of Companies Rated by Their Politics and Practices (Paperback)
Glad to see a book like this available. It's obviously taken a lot of research and people on both sides of the aisle will find it interesting to know how their consumer dollars are being spent by the corporations. These days you don't just vote at the polling booth. You vote with your paycheck.
