Book Description

June 28, 1999 047132616X 978-0471326168 2
The image of the Earth on the front cover was acquired from the GOES-8 Imager by the Laboratory for Atmosphere at NASA'S Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD. It was taken on September 2, 1994, using two channels for the Imager to produce a "natural color" effect. The photos shown here on the back cover illustrate the four spheres of the Earth system - the atmosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere - together with changes being produced by human activities.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Instructor's Manual and Test Bank, Computerized Test Bank, Laboratory Manual, Study Guide, CD-ROM, Transparencies and Slides available. -- The publisher, John Wiley & Sons --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher

A unique introduction to the holistic view of the Earth. Stresses the systems approach, showing the energy flows and links between the Earth's different parts--the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and the solid Earth--and the balance in the global environment that exists as a result of these interactions. Every chapter opens with a topical essay dealing with research on the subject matter and closes with a guest essay written by a researcher in the field. Special attention has been paid to select full-color artwork and photographs which illuminate discussions. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written, concise text, with excellent illustrations, May 17, 2011

I used this book for a graduate level course in earth science. It was not required reading, but since I had no earth science back ground, I found that I needed to read a basic textbook in order to understand the journal articles that were required for the course. By the end of the semester, I had read most of this extremely well written book, and felt that in terms of mastery of the course content, I had surpassed even those who had majored in geology as undergrads. I am a very visual learner, and particularly appreciated the beautiful illustrations, many of which visually summarize key concepts. One of my favorite textbooks ever.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Student, February 8, 2012

This book was recommended by the instructor and follows his lectures. It is very informative as textbooks go, and although I am not overly interested in science, it answers a lot of questions.

I was worried about ordering books online for my son, but after reading reviews, I decided to give it a try. I'm glad I did. Book was in great shape and was quickly shipped to my son's school..and I saved tons of money. Thanks.
