4.0 out of 5 stars Sticky Blue Pop, April 15, 2000
By
sacflies (Raleigh, NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Pop (Audio CD)
Adam Daniel-Blue Pop is a serious contender for my most listened to CD of the year. Another in a growing list of guys with a knack for writing catchy, melodic tunes that you can't help but like (Matthew Sweet, Elliott Smith, Collingwood & Schlesinger of Fountains of Wayne, Owsley, Michael Penn, Neil Finn, Tim Finn, etc.) These tunes do to your brain what Sugar Babies do to your teeth. And I don't mind these melodies stickin' around one bit.

There is only one problem I have with this CD. And that is the use of the "F" word on "Lovebug". The songs here are so sweet sounding that it just seems so out of place. During my first listen I had to go back and replay over that part to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. I am one that doesn't care for the use of such words in music, as we hear them enough in everyday life to begin with. I don't need to hear them when I am listening to music. Well, I'll get of my moral high horse now.

Give Blue Pop a try. Even with the misplaced word, this is one fine CD. So grab ya a bag of Sugar Babies and get ready for some sticky tunes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Record, March 14, 2000
This review is from: Blue Pop (Audio CD)
This is just a really nice, honest record. The quiet songs are really quiet (you can hear him breathing, like he's whispering every word) and the power pop tunes are just loud enough to get the point across without waking up the neighbors. Lots of minor chord stuff, some beach boy-esque vocals (structurually), and very simple, very straightforward pop songs.

The only thing I think keeps this from being a classic is that the production is a little too clean for my taste. Each note, chord, etc. is clean clean clean. You can tell he doesn't have a band behind him, but I bet this stuff would sound great live. A minor complaint that doesn't really get in the way of the songs (some of which are genuinely heartbreaking).

Tommy Keene-ish (not as loud), Velvet Crush-y (more modern sounding), Matthew Sweet-like (more confident vocals), a little Beatlesque.

A nifty little record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Power pop at its best., December 8, 1999
This review is from: Blue Pop (Audio CD)
For serious power pop fans only. For those of you like me who saw the Beatles in '64 and '66, bought the first two Big Star albums when they were originally released, dig Marshal Crenshaw's first album, like the Raspberries, think Tal Bachman's "She's So High" was an instant classic, you won't be disappointed with Adam Daniel. You hear someone like this about every other year, Myracle Brah's Eartsnop... was the last one to hit me as viscerally as Blue Pop. Need I say more!
