This CD features Eric with a great band playing songs that span his long and noteworthy career. Its a treat. The guitar work is impecible. Eric has said in the past that he is not really a blues singer. That changes with this CD. His vocals draw you into the the songs and keep you there until the end. One could question whether we really need one more version of Blue River but apart from that the CD is another milestone in a career that keeps moving forward with new songs and new treatments of the old ones.

Eric Andersen's first live CD is an excellent outing. Recorded at a small club in Oslo, Norway, Andersen calls this his blues CD. While one might argue that this is "blues-inflected" rather than a straight blues set, Eric starts with "The Other Side of This Life" by Fred Neil and laments stability and dreams of freedom, "My whole world's in an uproar, My whole life's upside down, Don't know where I'm going to, always bumming 'round." "Trouble In Paris" appeared on Eric's CD Ghosts Upon the Road & creates a somber stormy mood. "Runaway" from Eric's Beat Avenue CD has crunching electric guitars that lend bite to the lyric, "Coulda been in Mississippi, coulda been on the Yellow Brick Road, On a drunken Natchez gambling boat, Man, ya shoulda heard the whistle blow." "Don't It Make You Want to Sing the Blues" slows the pace in this new song that drenches sadness upon a broken relationship, "You wanted some affection; I must have been a fool; I saw you freezing while I was acting cool." "Sheila" and "Blue River" that appeared on Eric's most commercial album Blue River are both given great readings in this live set. "Goin' Gone" was on Eric excellent CD Memory of the Future with some tasty blues guitar, "When love is muddy waters and love is broken sails, When love is double-crossin' kisses and betrayals." Charles E. Calhoun's real name was Jesse Stone. He wrote songs under both names such as "Shake, Rattle & Roll," "Flip, Flop & Fly," & "Your Cash Ain't Nothing but Trash." Eric takes his "Losing Hand" & milks the blues, "The way you did me pretty baby, I never understood you." Eric records Jimmy Reed's "Shame Shame Shame" with excellent backing by his Norwegian band, "I try to tell you, baby, but it made no sense; Now you've got me baby up against that fence." "Blue Rain" brings some of Eric's familiar tracks into a new light along with a handful of newly recorded songs. It's an excellent set. Enjoy!

A nice jazzy collection but too few songs to justify the $19 price... get it for $10 on iTunes if you can't live without it. Eric is a truly wonderful performer and you can't miss this collection if you enjoy his music and "manly" voice!
