4.0 out of 5 stars The ESSENCE of the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, through the APPALACHIAN MOUNTAINS, in this relaxing gospel collection., March 4, 2011
This review is from: On a Blue Ridge Sunday (Audio CD)
There is much that could be said about Goerge Hamilton the 4th, and his music.
He had 'pop' songs chart from 1956-1959, then songs on the 'country' chart from 1960-1978.
He has extensively toured the world and earned the nickname
"The international Ambassador of Country Music", and hosted television programs in the UK and Canada.

This 2004 acoustic gospel music album is straight from the North Carolina mountains.
"On a Blue Ridge Sunday" received a Dove award nomination
for the "best bluegrass album of the year" category.
And a 'single' was nominated in the "best bluegrass recorded song" category in 2005.

Here Hamilton shows his bluegrass side with some simple down home gospel songs.
Some are very well known, some are not, but all are Hamilton's smooth easy listing style.
Hamilton's gentle spirit lends and authentic feel to this music.
The essence of the mountians are brought to you in these pure and simple sounds.
This is a laid-back and reflecting, relaxing album.

The 'recitation' of the story of John Newton doesn't really add anything to this collection.
But the other 13 tracks are some enjoyable, gentle gospel songs.
Hamilton's is of-late concentrating on gospel tours, home and abroad.

Footnote: If you like this album you may be interested in a more recent collection
Hamilton released in 2010, titled "Old fashioned hymns".
It's a 28 track C.D. of gospel music, produced by Lamon Records,
and includes many well known artists.
Some of those on the album with him are: Ricky Skaggs, - Marty Stuart, - Gail Davis, - Pat Boone,
Del McCoury, - Bill Anderson, - Connie Smith, - Tommy Cash, - Cliff Barrows, and, George Beverly Shea.

Pleasant arrangements on simple tunes, the words of a true believer, that's what you find on this nice CD. Some songs are well known, others not at all, but everything breathes an honest to God atmosphere. This is George H IV at his best, a man from North Carolina, in his own idiom, singing about his oldtime religion, a sample of authenticity. One remark: the long recitations by the end of the CD, of which one is about the life story of John Newton, the author of Amazing Grace, are not as convincing as the singing is. They had better be skipped. For the other tracks: it is recommended stuff.
