5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down
From childhood, I have always had a deep fascination for ocean life. The story's setting made the story very approachable for me. I received the book yesterday, and I finished it this morning! The words of Blue Road's simple tale flow as easily as water, and one can't help but feel swept away as you follow the adventures of two sea-dwelling friends.

3.0 out of 5 stars Animalistic but Directionless
I am unsure how to describe this book, or how to rate it. It has moments of great beauty, and moments of literary drabness. It seems to promise real philosophical insights, and at other times simple New Age prattle without a directional current. The book has great information on marine life, and at other times the Nussbaum's biology is simply incorrect. He really gets...

From childhood, I have always had a deep fascination for ocean life. The story's setting made the story very approachable for me. I received the book yesterday, and I finished it this morning! "Blue Road to Atlantis" is a joyful reminder of one of the most profound lessons I have learned earlier in life: Be who you are. Doesn't make sense? Read the book! Sometimes one needs gentle reminders and this book did exactly that for me. For other readers, it may unlock a new perspective never before realized. This book introduces what I would say is the "tao" or the "zen" in "Old Man in the Sea", for reasons I invite you to find out for yourself. You'll be pleasantly surprised, touched and hopefully motivated to reflect on your own life and evaluate what your true path is.

Now I'm not a fisherwoman, nor am I driven by The Quest to know The Mystery, however, I love good writing & Jay Nussbaum's is flawless. Told in the voice of Fishmael, a thoughtful Remora (who some call a marlinsucker), we gain a view of life on earth, through his perceptions, petulance & philosophies, as he accompanies Old Fish on his pilgrimage.

BLUE ROAD TO ATLANTIS is about symbiosis of sea & sky, relationships & thoughts, flesh & spirit. It is also about our ability to wander & wonder, our tiny fears & huge worries. It is food for the hungry & a water for the thirsty - most of all, it is a radiant read that will linger long in your heart & mind, & the stories Fishmael tells will unfold in your life, as you look through refreshed eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars At the risk of repeating what others have said..., March 19, 2003
This review is from: Blue Road to Atlantis (Hardcover)
... I'll just say that Blue Road is BEAUTIFUL. And so few works of fiction these days are. Read it, if only to learn about Jay's "10 Concentric Circles," which, if you're open minded, will give you a new tool to keep your priorities in life straight. For a parable about a bunch of fish, this is one funny, moving and extremely readable book.

DISNEY ANIMATED FEATURE DEPARTMENT, TAKE NOTE! This book would and should make a great animated feature that adults can enjoy, as well as kids!

5.0 out of 5 stars A rare 5-star review, July 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Road to Atlantis (Hardcover)
I heard through a friend that some fish book was getting a positive "buzz" in the book industry and had been translated into many languages before it was released in the United States. As an avid reader, I picked up what I thought would be a quick read.

While the story is quite gripping, I found myself doing as much thinking as reading. Soul searching really. The best comparison I can give is Atlas Shrugged but Ayn Rand beat you over the head with it's messages over hundreds of pages. This book is just as well written (what a treat these days), will evoke pretty much all of your emotions and has very deep meanings. All wrapped up in a 140 page parable.

This book has "classic" potential...especially if book groups pick up on it. You could talk about this one forever. You would also take something different from the book each time you read it.

As I am writing this review, I am realizing that this may be the best book I've read in a few years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Fish? Yep., October 11, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Blue Road to Atlantis (Hardcover)
This book is a delight. You won't believe that fish could be so interesting--so deep even (oops, now I'm punning like the book does!). It's a fun, quick read, and there are wonderful messages to be found about all sorts of life issues: from marriage to fighting. It's a pretty incredible little volume. Beyond expectations. It's really a perfect book to give as a gift.

I read this story in it's entirety one afternoon on the beach. I just couldn't put it down without finding out how it ended. I found it very profound and also extremely funny. A must read!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Whenever love ends is always too soon.", June 8, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Blue Road to Atlantis (Hardcover)
I've just finished listening to the audio book of "Blue Road to Atlantis" and am still under its spell. What a surprising, wonderful book this is. It is narrated by Fishmael the remora, who has spent his entire life living off the noble and wise marlin, Old Fish. A dreaded Red Tide is coming that threatens to kill millions of fish in the Gulf Stream, and Old Fish is charged with seeking the aid of the fabled Spotted Dolphins of Atlantis. He and Fishmael set off to find them, followed on the surface by an old and very patient Fisherman.

This story combines fantasy, humor, and cruel reality with a spiritual quest for enlightenment that completely drew me into the fishy world. Old Fish's dream of going to Atlantis is his way of fulfilling his "inner current" or destiny/karma. He is the voice of age and wisdom, tenderness and joy and I kept a notebook with me to jot down favorite phrases. I did not expect to be affected by this book, but its reflections on love, life, and death were truly moving. I heartily recommend "Blue Road to Atlantis."

5.0 out of 5 stars A Parable for our times, February 21, 2003
This review is from: Blue Road to Atlantis (Hardcover)
"Blue Road To Atlantis" is a wonderful parable for our troubled world. I found it to be a refreshing change from all of the recent novels I've read...with a beautiful message. Told from a fish's point of view, "Blue Road To Atlantis" is a must read for those seeking peace and solace in these troubled times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do you guys swim?, July 22, 2002
This review is from: Blue Road to Atlantis (Hardcover)
When I messed up my knee and found myself housebound for the summer I tried to look on the bright side- finally a chance to catch up on my reading. Fortunately, a good friend who "surfaced from out of the blue" gave me a copy of "Blue Road to Atlantis." Clearly, this has been the best book I've read all summer, and has made my recovery more enjoyable. It is extremely well written, adeptly mixing humor with little life-lessons. The author, Jay Nussbaum, demonstrates a keen sense of direction. After reading his book, I fully intend to "swim with the current."
