REVIEWS
"So great, I wish I'd come up with it myself...the Atopia series is one of those that will stick with me for the rest of my life." - HUGH HOWEY - Author of Wool.

DESCRIPTION
Olympia is a high-powered New York advertising executive with perhaps the chance of a lifetime when she lands the biggest account of her life - the new Cognix synthetic reality promotion. The stress, however, is killing her, and she desperately needs relief from the distraction of everything and everyone around her...

All of the Atopia stories are 'sidequels' that begin at the same moment, running side by side in time, so that you can start by reading any of them and then read the others in any order you choose to slowly reveal the mystery and terrifying danger that connects them all. Atopia is a near future world without borders that balances on the brink of post-humanism and eco-Armageddon.

5.0 out of 5 stars So great that I wish I'd come with it myself March 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
The first story in the Atopia series is one of those that will stick with me for the rest of my life. It's a tale of an irritable woman dealing with life's annoyances -- and the deeper meanings have all the hallmarks of classic science fiction. It's "out there" enough to seem fantastical, but the author's grasp of human nature makes it downright believable and I would even say poignant. At the end, I was left with that sad, empty feeling in the pit of my stomach, like my view of humanity had lurched to the side in an unexpected manner. The worst and best thing I can say about the story is that I sadly saw a lot of myself in the main character. I think we all can. And that moved me to want to be a more patient and accepting person, someone who appreciates the noise and activity thrown against my bright, blue, open skies.

The highest praise is this: It's so good, I wish I'd written it. A steal for under a buck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yay!!! March 12, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
After seeing a tweet from Hugh Howey about this story I immediately came in and scooped it up... about half an hour ago... then I sat here with my iPad and read the whole thing... damn you Hugh, I am meant to be doing homework...

I loved this story, it took me a couple of pages to really get into it but once it started it didn't stop and that ending... oh god that was a good ending and I really can't wait for the next one! So more things for me to wait for...

But in the end I guess I would like to say that this is one of those bits of work that give you an impression that 'Yeah, I know what's gonna happen... I have seen this before' then by the end your thinking 'wait... what... Damn...' and then your hanging for more... Like I am now!

EDIT: Godamn not looking where I am clicking... this IS meant to be a 5 star review... I love these kind of stories... no vampires or wizards or zombies (Don't worry, I will still like 'I, Zombie' Hugh) and no twisted unrealistic love triangles... more people need to write like this!

I rather liked this story, as it resembles classic science fiction (especially with how it ends). The idea behind it is great, but I think it needs more refinement in its execution. I found it a little difficult to get past the first 4 or 5 pages, as I found the sentence structure and descriptions to be a little awkward/clunky and a bit forced. I thought that some of the sentences were overly long too. However, as the story progressed, these became less apparent, as the momentum of the plot overshadowed them.

I found the protagonist, Olympia, to be a little flat and one-dimensional. I suppose that it's necessary for the narrative to have her be some sort of archetype for a person who gets more than she wished for (like King Midas). However, making her so extreme in only one aspect makes it difficult for the reader to visualize the character.

I loved the idea behind pssi, however, my geeky side would have liked a more detailed pseudo-scientific explanation of how the system works, again to make it more easy to visualize. While I felt the story was a bit flat, the concept of pssi seems quite promising, and it's used really well in the other books in the Chronicles.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun short story with some interesting ideas
First be aware, this is a short story. A very quick read, but not a bad one. It's your typical technophobe story warning about the dangers of technology. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever
Well written and a clever premise. Not quite like anything else I've read. I think I will go look for the rest of the stories that go along.

I started into this book but could not get very far. Too much vulgar language; the F word, sexual references. I just found it offensive. Read more

Interesting prediction of how our senses could be manipulated to provide augmented reality, and the unintended impact it could have on or lives. A very cool "psy-fi" story.
