5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best melodic punk albums ever

3.0 out of 5 stars The only "pop-punk" band I can stand
The Ataris is a good pop/emo band. I wouldn't call this punk, though. They are NOT like Blink 182 at all so people should quit comparing the two. First of all, they are musically and lyrically much more mature. Kris Roe obviously spent a lot of time and emotion writing his songs. The music is melodic but also has meaning unlike every pointless song Blink 182 has recently...

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best melodic punk albums ever, June 28, 2000
i have been listening to this cd for a long while now, and this is hands down one of the top 5 albums i have ever bought in my entire life. While at first you may read the lyrics and say "hey these guys are like all the new school punk bands" but they are much better in that regard. The difference with this cd is that every song is distinctive. Their are NO filler type songs just sitting there to take up space, every song is amazing, and they just NEVER get old. This is by far the Ataris best album they have recorded and its just amazing. For me, each song related to me personally and it also let me think a little more on my outlook on life. As they say "never compromise what you believe" and i have carried that with me for a long time now.

The songs are undescribable...they are just amazing. Kris Roe's vocals are just so interesting that you can't help but not like his songs. Moreover his guitar skill is likewise awesome, kind of makes you think when you find out that his amazing guitar skills are played by him while he is playing his guitar upside down.

Best and most memorable songs for me have got to be Losing Streak, San Dimas High, I Wont spend another night alone, and The LAST song i will ever write about a girl. Those are just the best songs. If you want a cd that will continue to shine and be one of your favorites for years to come i really suggest you buy this cd. it is beyond what any current commercial bands have put out. It is simply music for those with an ear for intelligent and deep lyrics, and awesome guitar melodies. You are only causing yourself grief by not buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Foundation Album, April 20, 2005
Well after reading the last review on here saying how So Long, Astoria was much better than this one and how anyone who disagreed doesn't know what good music is, I decided to add my two cents. This album was clearly The Ataris' stepping stone album. Anywhere But Here was great, but it blended in with many other bands at the time. Here, Kris Roe and the Ataris beautifully flex their story-telling, song writing muscle here. So Long, Astoria is their fourth full length, and most mature album to date. But without Blue Skies, it would be nothing. It is here where they adopted their style and built onto it with experience and the improving benefits of time. This is very heartfelt album with great stories to tell. Lyrically, Roe took from the usual "things were great, she broke my heart - life sucks" idea, incorporated it into his own experiences and wrote great relateable, not cliche, lyrics to it. Musically, the chord progressions and melodies are superb and un-matchable for the time, and even today. Just listen and read into songs like 1*15*96, the infamous San Dimas Highschool Football Rules, In Spite of the World and ESPECIALLY My Hotel Year, you'll get what I mean (and also read the book it was based on, Coupland's Life After God).

So for those who think this album sucks and So Long, Astoria is much better - you're entitled to your opinion. But respect the fact that this album was a foundation with which they would be nothing without.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Album!, December 1, 1999

This CD is awesome. Every single song is really catchy. If you're a fan of punk music and/or you like more popular bands like Green Day and Blink 182, you'll love this CD as much as I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome cd, May 4, 2001
By
The Ataris may be the most technical and musicly talented punk band ever. They create incredibly crunchy guitar riffs that you think could only come up in magical dreams, which are showcased on the standouts 1-15-96,San Dimmas High School Football Rules,Your Bouyfriend Sucks, and Angry Nerd Rock. All of the songs are very deeply emotional about relationships and breaking your heart, which is vocalized over spot-on perfect, creative melodies. In Angry Nerd Rock, the vocals sound submerged under water and then at the end are released with a breath of incredibly fresh air.My Hotel Year is the slow one on the cd and is arranged nicely with more awesome lyrics. My favorite songs though,in order are-1:Your Boyfriend Sucks-2:Angry Nerd Rock-3:San Dimmas High School Football Rules-4:1*15*96-5:Last Song I Will Ever Write About a Girl. Please check this one out for your own sake.

5.0 out of 5 stars if you have any feeling at all.. then you'll like this band, June 15, 2003
By A Customer
first of all, i just wanna say i love the ataris, their my favorite band, and no i don't consider them punk. ... well anywho, i think if you have any emotion than you'll love this band, and this is their best album... in plus i think its amazing that me and kris roe have so much in common... because "san dimas" describes exactly how i feel about a girl, and the last 2 lines of "your boyfriend sucks" is exactly what happened with me and the same girl... and let me say it sucks having feelings for your bestfriend, especially when nothing can happen, and these guys express that, and no other band does it, and if they do, they cant pull it off like the ataris do... bottom line is pick up this cd, its tragically beautiful...

5.0 out of 5 stars This rocks more than your mom..., August 20, 2002
By A Customer
Man, I love this CD. It has exceptionally well-written lyrics, and heavy guitar riffs and crashing drum beats that you can just thrash around to and rock out. Overall, I would have to say my favorite songs are: Broken Promise Ring, San Dimas High School Football Rules, and Your Boyfriend Sucks. All of the songs are very personal, yet you can still relate to them. I guess I would categorize this as pop-punk/emo, but if you are into the likes of NFG and The Starting Line, check it out...

This is really an AWESOME CD! if you're debating on which Atari's CD to get first or whatever THIS IS THE ONE TO GET. The other ones are AWESOME too, not to downplay them, but this is a really great starter. They are AWESOME live. I just saw them play last week and they were great! Totally buy this CD and support the ataris!

The Ataris are a great pop-punk band. Their lyrics are catchy and you can't get them out of your head. "San Dimas High School Football Rules" is a song that rates right up there with Green Day's "Paper Lanterns" and "Dry Ice". Buy this album, help the Ataris get the recognition they deserve!

5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite cd for almost a year, August 11, 2002
By
Last summer I went into a record store and had never heard The Atari's music, but for some reason thought of their name while in there, and so I grabbed this cd and listened to it out of curiousity. Ever since then it's been one of my favorite cd's, I havent gotten tired of it and its one of the few cd's I have that I can listen to without pressing the skip button so I dont have to sit through a few songs. My favorite's on it are:I Won't Spend Another Night Alone, and The Last Song I Will Ever Write About a Girl. I know it isn't ver punk, but that was the first "non-main-stream" cd I had ever bought and opened me up to other cd's and now I like a lot of emo, punk, and ska that most of my friends havent heard of and it's kinda fun being the one they come to when they want to hear some new music that isnt repeated 10,000 times a day on the radio

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Ataris CD ever, July 7, 2003
By
DuMb SkA FrEaK (Brewster, New York) - See all my reviews
I absolutely love the Ataris, they've been my favorite band forever. This is probably their best CD along with "Anywhere but Here". The songs on here are faster than their later stuff, which is good. '1*15*96' is probably one of my all time favorite songs. Almost every song on here is good, except for a few at the end, which is why I took off one star. But the greatness of the rest of the sogs make up for the few bad ones. Just get this if you are just getting into the Ataris, it's fricken great...
