Book Description

May 27, 2008

Jill Breck was just doing her job as a river guide when she saved the life of Lane Faroe, son of two of St. Kilda Consulting's premier operators. But when a string of ominous events—including a mysterious fire that kills her great-aunt and a furor in the Western art world raised by a dozen Breck family paintings—culminates in a threat to her life, Jill reluctantly calls in a favor.

Zach Balfour works part-time as a consultant for St. Kilda. His expertise is gathering and analyzing information from unlikely and often dangerous sources. Though he's got the skills to be a highly effective bodyguard, being a bullet catcher isn't his preferred way to spend time.

Protecting Jill will take him into familiar territory—among a strange, savagely competitive bunch of collectors who'll do anything to stay at the top. But Jill is in deeper waters than she's ever known; as she soon discovers, the perils of running wild rivers are tame compared with the hidden dangers in the high-stakes game of art collecting.

From the cozy rooms of the Breck homestead cabin to the cold multimillion-dollar galleries of the Western art circuit, Zach and Jill must race against time to unmask a ruthless killer hidden in a blue smoke of money, threats, lies, and death. . . .

From AudioFile

A combination of action, intrigue, and sexual tension results in superb romantic suspense. Narrator Carol Monda delivers a confident performance as the independent Jill Breck, a river guide who is pulled into a dangerous scheme when she inherits a collection of unsigned canvases. As she tries to uncover the truth about the origin of the paintings, her life is threatened, and she must seek help from a private consulting firm. Monda's husky rendering of operative Zach Balfour adds to his masculine strength while keeping his tone caring and protective. Overall, Monda's performance keeps up with the fast pace of the action, yet she deftly slows things down for the steamy scenes when Jill and Zach act upon their mutual attraction. 1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, May 7, 2009
This review is from: Blue Smoke and Murder CD (Audio CD)
Very disappointing. The story line was lost totally by the time all of the details of art were dealt with. I bought the book but got the CD book from the library so started with that. I made it through the first half of the story but just couldn't take listening to the other half.

This book became so bogged down in descriptions and explanations of the art world that neglected the story and character development. I am a huge Elizabeth Lowell fan, but this story missed the mark big time!

2.0 out of 5 stars Story is pretty boring and Narration is painful, April 17, 2011
By
This review is from: Blue Smoke and Murder CD (Audio CD)
I wanted to like this CD. It is unabridged, and I enjoy Elizabeth Lowell. But I agree with the other reviewers of the CD and the book- way too much time with "Fine" Western art. Often is actually pretentious while it mocked the pretentiousness of the art world! Lots of eye rolling.
Some interesting points, I would have liked the art aspect in moderation, and I like some of her "strong woman" family history - although the whole Mormon polygamy thing felt way out of left field!?!
The characters were okay - but fell a bit flat.
Specifically for the CD - the lady narrating did ok with main character voices - but oh geez. Sometimes romance novels just don't translate well out loud, because, well, sometimes they can be ridiculous and you can't just skim through it when you are listening to it while driving across the country. The narrator often made the heroine sound whiny and ridiculous. She did rather well with the male character, Zach, although if I hear her say "That's blue smoke" one more time I might go nuts.
However, the other main male role, the hopped-up on steroid killer with a Girl with a dragon tattoo-type sidekick (I mean really, this book can be all over the place!) was ridiculous. The narrator used a silly batman voice for him!
Skip this one, unless you LOVE Lowell and have read everything else. Don't get the unabridged CD.
