Great Return Visit,
By Samuel Chell (Kenosha,, WI United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Blue Starr (24bt) (Mlps) (Audio CD)
I came into possession of this album quite by happenstance, having only a vague recollection of Kay Starr as a '50's purveyor of "Hit Parade" ephemera such as "Rock 'n Roll Waltz." What a revelation! What Kay lacks in subtlety, she makes up for with rock-solid pitch, strong pipes, and exhuberant self-confidence. Place her somewhere between Patsy Cline and Dinah Washington--in fact, if she were to appear on the scene today, no doubt she would have to make a choice between country and soul. Or, with her belting quality, maybe a rock band or even Broadway. In any case, she so completely owns the material on this album that I find myself accepting tunes I once would have dismissed as inferior. Whatever success she achieved on the jukeboxes of Fonz's day was richly deserved.
