Biography

The gravelly voiced Chris Rea first came to public attention in the late 1970s when his debut album Whatever Happened to Benny Santini? scored a hit with "Fool (If You Think It’s Over)". The song peaked at No.12 in the Billboard Hot 100, and it remains his highest charting single to date in America. Most of his success thereafter was won in Europe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blue Street (Five Guitars), January 2, 2004
This review is from: Blue Street (Audio CD)
Chris Rea goes into a new genre of music and once this CD gets out into the main stream, it will take the jazz world by storm. Slide Guitar meets Blues Jazz. Very ingenious and very Chris Rea...

The CD flows from one melody to another within each song and from one song to another seamlessly. The music starts as elemental jazz and progresses to slide guitar and rock melodies and concludes with disco/rap melodies. Above all else its the simplicity of each melody flowing into the next that keeps all the songs fresh and alive throughout the entire CD.

I have now listened to it for 4 weeks (continuously) and I'm still finding new complexities in each song. Chris does have a melodic voice, but it is not needed to portray his musical intent throughout this CD.

This is a breakthrough CD and one that will grow in stature as time passes. Everyone of my friends who has listened to this CD has gone out and ordered it. Its too bad its so hard to find here in North America...

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for fans of Rea, October 10, 2003

If you are a fan of Chris Rea then you are going to love this album. All new songs, but he dips in here and there with familiar guitar lines.

Essentially a instrumental guitar album with one vocal song "Are You Ready"

The first song Blue Miles (a tribute to Miles Davis) is slow and moody, but the rest of the songs rock and groove. My favorite is Funk#48 a tribute of sorts to Joe Walsh's Funk#49.

I would put this up there with his Road To Hell and Stony Road albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth Jazzy Guitar with a Strong Blues Influence, March 22, 2005

I have really enjoyed the direction Chris Rea has gone since overcoming his serious illness. His music has just gotten better each year. This is a very smoothly edited CD and is great to listen to at work when you need to concentrate but still enjoy quality music.

I read that his concerts of his blues and jazz material have been very impressive. It is unfortunate that he does not tour the United States.
