Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This first season of Blue Toad Murder Files is a fun, amusing take on the "adventure game on rails" genre. Like most adventure games, there is a strong focus on characters and story (you do have to solve the mysteries, after all). Unlike most adventure games, there is no free exploration or item management. That's just fine, as the great voice acting and challenging Mensa-style puzzles more than make up for that particular lack of depth.

My only complaint about the series is that, while they display in native 1080p and the characters look pretty crisp, the backgrounds, building, and other aspects of the indoor and outdoor sets leave a lot to be desired. Any time the camera zooms in to an outside location, the shrubs/trees, cows, cars/trains, ducks, and other set pieces are amazingly low detail. Since the focus is so much on the characters, and they look pretty great, this isn't too much of a distraction.

Every episode we played had us smiling most of the time with amusement, and laughing out loud in a few instances. Some of the puzzles are particularly devilish, but figuring them out gave us a great sense of accomplishment. Even so, a hint system for the puzzles would have been nice.

Each episode also includes its own set of trophies, and it usually took us one additional play through of each episode to get all the trophies for that episode. Each episode takes an hour or two to play through. Disappointingly, there is no platinum trophy for getting all the trophies in all the episodes.

Overall, a great first season and highly recommended.
