Paul Carrack: a Talent Worthy of More Attention,
By Jeff Martin (Huntington, IN United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Views (Audio CD)
Paul Carrack, a member of Ace and Mike and the Mechanics, has a voice most other singers wish they had. It's soothing and soulful without being boring. His voice is always noticed, but the name is never realized. "Blue Views" is, by far, my favorite album of his. With such great songs as "Eyes of Blue". "Oh oh oh my my my" has a bluesy sound and my personal favorite "For Once in Our Lives" is also great. "How Long?" and his rendition of the Eagles song "Love Will Keep Us Alive" (which he wrote) are also great. Not much in the way of misses here. GRADE: A

Great listening: One of the best in my humble opinion,

It continues to amaze me that Paul Carrack has not achieved more recognition as a standalone artist. His solo work is by far his best. Each of his albums (showing my age) has that "special something" that touches every genre of music, not to mention one's heart. Blue Views is one of his best works. Paul's incredibly smooth, unstrained, voice is great on this album and every song is as good as the last. I can't understand why the critics would insinuate his lack of popularity may be partially due to his size or hairline. Give me a "shallow" break. How superficial can one be? He simply hasn't been marketed (and played) to death like most of the popular musicians of the day. Recommendation: Buy it! Listen to it! You will come to appreciate the depth of this man's talent.

A Great Album from an Underappreciated Artist,

Don't let jealous would-be-if-they-could-be critics turn you off of buying this fantastic album with their sour grapes. Carrack is one of the most accomplished soul/pop singers of our era -- and every song on this album is masterfully crafted and a joy to listen to from beginning to end. I consider it an essential purchase. I also highly recommend Carrack's "Beautiful World." K.G. Smith -- kgsniagfalls@hotmail.com

I mostly listen to music in my car and there's always a Paul Carrack CD (and Michael McDonald CD) tucked away in there even as other artists rotate in and out. I've loved his voice since first hearing him back in his days with Squeeze. If you're just discovering Paul Carrack (where have you been???), this CD would be a fine first choice. One Good Reason is still probably my favorite Paul Carrack collection, but you can't go wrong with this CD either. If you like great blue-eyed soul vocalists, Michael McDonald is also pretty darned fine, although his voice is quite different from Paul Carrack's and you'll likely appreciate each of them for different reasons. Enjoy!

Smooth Grooves,
By "big_apple31" (Maryland) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blue Views (Audio CD)
More laid back than his other albums, this one moves effortlessly from one smooth groove to the next with the help of soulful lyrics and a superb voice. You already know two of the songs, 'How Long' and 'Love Will Keep Us Alive', both written by Carrack and performed with other bands but done here in his own blue-eyed soul style. The songs are catchy, notably 'No Easy Way Out'. It's sad that Paul Carrack's talents aren't more widely known. There are far too many people in the world who don't know what they're missing out on.

I've been looking for this album for a long time... Believe it or not, I found it brand new on a "Clearance" basket in a small CD shop. The salesman almost told me with his eyes, "I wouldn't bother if you ask me to pay anything you carry in your pockets for that CD"... I didn't hesitate and asked for a discount, the salesman took out the Sale Price sticker and told me, "give me any money you have and take it, but right now!"
Wow, what an album! WHAT A VOICE! Man, this Paul Carrack knows how to perform good music, and even better, how TO SING IT!!!! If you like Mike and The Mechanics, Squeeze, Ace and those rare 70s British musical 'artifacts', get this album! It's a must-have!!!!

Paul Carrack's creativity and talent never ceases to amaze me! His remake of "How Long" brings me back to his earlier years with Ace (with a hint of blues). If you ever need to chill out and enjoy the summer with some smooth tunes, this is the guy to turn to!!!!!

Easy Soft Pop,

Paul Carrack is best known as a lead singer of Mike and the Mechanics, the group by Mike Rutherford of Genesis and his biggest hit so far is mid 80s hit DON'T SHED A TEAR. His 95 solo effort is mostly soft ballads and lacks rock but it is refreshing and healing when you are tired.
US version starts with uptempo catchy song, NO EASY WAY OUT which should be the single from this album sounding similar to his signature hit DON'T SHED A TEAR. FOR ONCE IN OUR LIVES is really 70s feel good pop and the title track BLUE VIEWS could have been in Michael Bolton's TIME LOVE AND TENDERNESS album. He is also good at songwriting and Ace's 1975 hit HOW LONG is written when he was in ACE. His newer version of HOW LONG is also here fitting well with the album style. Other excellent songs include ALWAYS HAVE ALWAYS WILL, groovy ONLY A BREATH AWAY. Verdict: Mostly soft 70s feel good music. Rating: 76 out of 100, a bit more of crunching rockers might have boosted my rating... Recommended for: 70s easy pop fans, such as Eagles, early Jackson Browne, Ace, and so on.
