The Blue Viking tells us the story of Rurik (from The Bewitched Viking) and is one of Sandra Hill's best releases to date. The Blue Viking tells us the story of Rurik (from The Bewitched Viking) and is one of Sandra Hill's best releases to date. Although this book can be read without having read its predecessors, here's how the order goes for anyone interested: The Reluctant Viking (time travel), The Outlaw Viking (time travel), The Tarnished Lady (historical), The Bewitched Viking (historical), and The Blue Viking (historical).

Rurik the Vain has been scouring the countryside for a Scottish witch named Maire that he seduced and abandoned five years past. The witch wreaked her vengance well, for after Rurik took her virginity and left her she marked him with a permanent jagged blue line that runs down the center of his otherwise perfectly handsome face. Determined to remove the blue mark at all costs so that he can wed with a high born Viking woman he is betrothed to, Rurik sets off for Scotland to find the witch.

Maire Campbell has many problems, the most fundamental one being that Duncan MacNab is determined to lay claim to her lands now that all of her brothers are dead and her five-year-old son Jamie is too young to provide leadership to the clan. When Rurik releases her from a MacNab prison and agrees to help her people flush out the MacNabs, she is grateful to him, but isn't certain she can remove the blue mark in exchange for his services because of her other problem...Maire might be a witch, bit she's the most inept witch ever to practice the witchly arts.

Rurik might have come to the Highlands in order to have the blue mark removed, but once he sets his sights back on Maire the jagged line down the center of his face begins to wane in importance. Remembering his betrothal, he will try to resist the lure of falling in love with the world's worst witch, but he can hold out for only so long...

Sandra Hill just gets better and better with each successive novel. This is an incredibly entertaining book and definitely one for the keeper shelf. The Blue Viking is fast paced, humorous, and crackling with sensual sizzle. This is a definite must-buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't we all wish we knew men like these vikings, February 4, 2001

I really enjoyed the newest addition to the Sandra Hill Viking series. Rurik and Maire were very good together. Our hero Rurik has to overcome many obstacles to get what he truly wants and deserves. Maire also has the same obstacles to overcome. The novel talked alot about self esteem issues and how the characters were able to finally get what they wanted and deserved. It was not the same things they wanted in the beginning of the novel. The other characters work well together. It just goes to show you that the bigger a Viking is the harder they fall. The book was humerous, had adventure, was very sexual and an enjoyable read. I would recomend this and all the Sandra Hill Viking novels to any reader. Maybe we could also hear more about the Viking S spot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Humorous, Witty, Delightful, Sensual, March 12, 2001

This is my first Sandra Hill book but certainly not my last. I caught myself laughing out loud during this reading.

Rurick, a Viking, was cursed 5 years before by Mairie the Witch (supposedly). She inadvertently placed a blue zig-zag mark down the center of his face. For the last 3 years Rurick has been searching for Mairie so she can be forced to remove this mark as his bethroted, Theta, will not wed him until it is removed. What Rurick does not know is that Mairie is not a very good witch. She keeps mixing up her witch's chants with strange, funny results.

The story centers on Rurick's efforts to find Mairie, accompanied but his not so knightly knights who are incredibly funny. When Rurick finds Mairie he finds she has been locked in a cage suspended over a pit of snakes and will be left there until she marries him. In his pursuit, Rurick has been joined by Mairie's clansmen who are old and many missing body parts but they are not to be deterred. They view Rurick as a Scotish Viking and Rurick's scald Bolthar writes incredibly funny prose about Rurick's exploits.

Rurick had a one night stand with Mairie 5 years previously which resulted in a son, Wee Jamie. As Rurick would not take Mairie with him she was left to marry another who discovering she was not a virgin mistreated her. Rurick does not know about the existence of his son.

I am not fond of Viking stories but this was hilarious and I am looking forward to reading Ms. Hill's other books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vikings, Highlanders & witches, what else could you ask for?, March 2, 2001

Another fun and sexy viking saga from Ms.Hill. If you've previously read any of her time travel tales you may remember Rurik. He's the extremely handsome(and very vain) viking whose face was marred by a witch. She put a blue zigzag right down the middle. Here we find Rurik in search of the witch. He's had the mark for 5 years now. His future bride, Theta, refuses to marry him until the blue stripe is removed. His years of searching for her finally come to an end in her highland home.

Maire, the witch, has been living in a cage hanging over a pit of snakes, placed there by her brother-in-law, Duncan McNab. Kenneth McNab, her husband has been dead a few months and greedy Duncan wants her land. She will be set free of the cage when she agrees to Duncan's proposal. Maire knows that agreeing will only end in her death after the wedding. there is no love for her where Duncan is concerned.

Rurik is enrage to find Maire in a cage and comes to her rescue. Maire accepts Rurik's help to rid her home of the McNabs after spending years hiding from him. She has a secret she rather he didn't know about. And Rurik is sure going to be angry when he finds out Maire's witchly skills are off kilter. He just might never get rid of the blue mark after all.

5.0 out of 5 stars ACTUALLY A 10*, March 27, 2001
I have read all of Sandra Hill's Viking books, loved them all. The "Blue Viking" is far and away the best. It is funny, witty, charming, sexy and just plain delightful! What a great story and characters. Bolthor's sagas about Rurik and Maire (and other things) are LOL. I was sorry to see the book end, yet read it at the speed of light. Please write some more, Ms. Hill. You are a wonderful author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, February 27, 2002
Well I bought this book just because I love Sandra Hill's books. I found this one to be wonderfully funny and witty. I loved the hot love scenes and the secondary characters were terrific. I just found out that this it the 5th book in a series and now I must read the others, oh what a chore that will be! NOT!
This is the story of the dark Viking named Rurik the Vain. He is very particular about his looks and he is on a quest for the witch who marked him 5 years previously with a blue mark on his face. He wants her to remove it so that he can marry. When he first encounters his witch in Scotland she has been placed in a cage hanging above a pit of deadly snakes by her former brother-in-law Duncan MacNab. Maire the witch is in fear of her life and that of her son's. MacNab is planning on wedding her and then killing her just to get her clans lands. Her clan asks Rurik for his help in return for her removing the blue mark. The only problem is that Maire is not a very good witch. She often screws up and her spells go awry. Rurik agrees to help but not just because of the blue mark. He finds himself strongly drawn to the witch and her people and soon finds that he has been adopted by the clan, as have his men. He struggles with what he had planned for his future and what may change those plans.
I really enjoyed this book and will definately read the previous books and all those that may come after this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Series Keeps its Steam! Excellent!, February 21, 2002
This is the 5th book in Mrs. Hill's uncompareable Viking series that began in "Reluctant Viking" and continued on through, "The Outlaw Viking", "The Tarnished Lady", "The Bewitched Viking" and now "THE BLUE VIKING", with the lead male being Rurik the Blue Viking.
He was introduced to us in "The Bewitched Viking" as Tykir's best friend who suffered a blue mark cast upon his vain face by an angry witch from Scotland. Now in his own story, Rurik has to find the witch named Maire of the Moors to remove the mark, else his betrothed will not marry him back home in the North Lands. But finding the elusive Maire is another challenge. He has been looking for almost 5 years with no luck.
Could his life get any worse? Never say never, for Rurik "The Great", or at least that is what Bothar the Skald calls him, (his best friend Tykir's bad idea of a joke sending Bothar along with him to find the witch)things do indeed get worse when he comes upon her in a cage held captive by a warring clan. Also the fact that Rurik is now angry when he feels sparks fly again after 5 years between them when they lock eyes. Or it could be that he hates eating haggis, and Maire's pantry has plenty of it, just to spite him. Or the god-awful bagpipe lessons that Bothar is determined to take while they are there...or maybe, just maybe it's the fact that he is sure the witch has placed a curse on him for good this time when he feels his heart fall for the wilesome witch of the moors...

Maire Campbell has no time for the man that left her high and dry 5 years ago. He took her innocence and left her with a secret that she has hidden fiercely. Now he has come looking for her to remove the zigzag blue mark she accidentally cursed on his vain face. The only problem is she isn't a very good witch at all, in fact she is known throughout the clan and even neighboring clans how inept she is. Another problem is Rurik refuses to leave until she removes it. How will she keep her secret from him and fight off a warring MacNabs? She has no idea, but that is the least of her problems she soon learns, her heart is remembering his touch and it remembers her heartbreak when he left her alone to face a unwanted marriage full of anger and hate.
Will one night of fierce lovemaking cure all or end all? Will Rurik be able to look past the mark and see his love for a woman he deserted years ago before its too late? Or will the MacNabs capture the Laird Campbell and kill her secret...

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Sandra Hill, February 7, 2001
As an avid fan of Ms. Hill's I couldn't wait to read The Blue Viking. As usual it was well worth the wait! Filled with really well developed and unusual characters, The Blue Viking is a touching love story between two people that you'll fall in love with. An interesting plot filled with funny sagas, witches creates a page turner you'll never forget. If you enjoy laughing out loud, falling in love and escaping to a different world read the Blue Viking - you won't be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 Stars, Lots of Laughs, March 10, 2011
By
This review is from: The Blue Viking (Mass Market Paperback)
There are so few authors who write historicals that are hysterical. There are contemporary romances with laughs throughout, but it's hard to find a really funny historical or time travel. THE BLUE VIKING is a gem among the rocks. Rurik and Maire are an unlikely couple, seeing how Maire marked Rurik's face with a blue zigzag. He wants her to remove it, but the problem is, she's not sure how. She's not a very good witch, unfortunately for Rurik (and her clan).

I will warn of a brief mention of animal torture in this one, but it fits in with the character of the MacNab clan. I'm sensitive to such things, and only mention it for those like me. There are very few scenes without humor, and only where needed to keep the story fun but realistic.

I'm reading these Viking novels out of order, but they're still enjoyable and funny. Sandra Hill is one of few, for those of us who sometimes need laughter along with our romances.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rurik and Maire, May 1, 2008
Five years ago Rurik (a vain viking) and Maire (a highland witch of the Campbell clan) had a passionate (thats questionable) encounter, after which Rurik left Maire to go a-viking..despite Maire's pleas to go with him. In Maire's anger at Rurik's dismissal she inadvertantly (she is not a very good witch) applied magic herbs which caused a blue jagged mark to appear on Ruriks face. Maire, finding herself with child and no way to contact Rurik, was then arranged to marry a Macnab (a despised neighboring clan) by her brother. Over the next few years her brothers and her husband fall victim to the elements and the warring lands leaving Maire to take care of her people and raise her son while at the mercy of the remaining Macnabs.
After five years of ridicule for the blue mark Rurik finally locates Maire, after searching diligently for the last remaining couple of years because his betrothed demands the removal before she will wed him. When he locates Maire he is outraged at how the Macnabs have treated the woman and agrees to help her free her clan from the grip of the Macnabs in return for removing the blue mark. During this time Rurik decides he will have his revenge on Maire for the ridicule he has received, and the revenge will only be satisfied in the furs on the bed. While relenting to Rurik's advance's, which causes her body and her senses to melt, Maire tries to find a way to tell Rurik that he is the father of her son before he realizes that fact on his own and Rurik debates on whether or not to tell Maire he is betrothed to another woman.
Will the mark be removed and Rurik return to his home to marry his betrothed? How will Rurik react to being a father? How will Maire take the news of Rurik's betrothal after their time together? Read this book and see how this all comes together.

This was an ok viking romance. I did not think the story was that unique and I thought the author put too much effort weaving humor to the point that it became redundant.
I did not read any of the other books in this series, but I did not feel anything was missing so I believe this book could stand alone. There were references to the other stories but I found no gaping holes in The Blue Viking that the other stories would need to fill. I do recommend this book to avid viking romance genre fans.
