Format: Hardcover
It's rare to find a really good and engaging non-fiction book for early readers. It's even rarer, within that category, to find a good non-fiction PICTURE book for really early readers. Sure, there are books with pictures of shells, or doggies, or things like that, and they can be great fun. But this book is different. It is entertaining, but it has weight.

Most textbooks consist, not surprisingly, of text. There are some photos and drawings and sidebars, but they're mostly print. Now reverse that. Think of a textbook that is mostly drawings. Charming and informative watercolor-style drawings. Now add some text and some captions around the edges. Make those captions and paragraphs direct and to the point, but with an engaging little-kid friendly lilt to them. That's basically what you get here.

Lots of the analogies and descriptions are kid oriented. (You don't get the whale's length in terms of meters, but in terms of how many big diggers that would be.) That's clever and creative and both invites and informs a little reader. It seems pretty clear that while this is a book about blue whales, it's also about teaching a youngster what non-fiction is and how it can be fun. The reality of blue whales is as cool as any fictional creature and this book subtly gets that point across. It also gets a kid used to being treated like a student. By that I mean the book never aims down at the reader, but rather gently challenges the reader to step up. (Something isn't "big", it's "colossal".)

Kids know when they're being patronized and they know when they're being challenged, and this book, with its subject, color and style, stands as a wonderful example of the challenging and rewarding and entertaining book. What a nice non-fiction find.

Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Stunningly beautiful illustrations are the highlight of this nonfiction picture book for children. I always enjoy marine animal books and these gorgeous pictures of whales create a sense of awe. The pictures show the story of an imaginative boy reading the very same book we are and he is included in the illustrations which compare the size of whales to everyday objects to help appreciate their enormousness. The text itself is purely factual, told in a simple and straightforward manner concentrating on interesting and entertaining facts. Lovely picture book for about preschool to Gr. 3.

‘The Blue Whale’, a book for children made by Jenni Desmond, shows that great children books do not even have to have a fictional plot, nor the incredible characters, because the nature itself provides the main heroes that are able to create exciting stories.

At the beginning of the book, the reader is going to meet one curious boy that will open the book, starting to read about the whales. Together with the main character, our children are embarking on the journey to learn a lot about these beautiful and great animals.

And though the scientific content itself is worth enough to buy your child this book, I especially liked the beautiful artwork that nicely complements the text found within the covers. The illustrations are made using the collage technique and colored pencil, and afterwards digitally processed.

Desmond’s illustrations are delivered in a way that even the youngest children will be able to enjoy the book, understanding the subjects the author is discussing on particular page. In a graphical way, the author shows how big whales are – for example putting the eye of whale in whole length or the other example where fifty persons are fitted inside the whale’s mouth.

There are some other similar examples that overall makes this book very accessible for children when it comes to the pictures. On the other hand, the text based on the scientific facts is presented in an easy to understand and simple manner that will keep reader interested and intrigue your child to learn more.

Combining these two aspects, ‘The Blue Whale’ is certainly the type of children book that should have reserved space on child’s bookshelf – a beautiful visual experience and a large amount of interesting knowledge about the nature make Jenni Desmond’s book highly recommended.

The Blue Whale is a nonfiction picture book that is written and illustrated by Jenni Desmond. The book begins by talking about a child reading a book - this book. Doing this connects your child with the child in the book. The book then proceeds to give you and your child interesting facts about blue whales. For example, did you know that a blue whale can grow as long as 100 feet, but it's eyeball is only 6 inches big. Blue whales also cannot breathe underwater, and therefore the only sleep they get is short naps close to the ocean's surface. "Blue whales can never completely lose consciousness, not even in sleep, otherwise, they would drown." How fascinating, but awful! These are just some of the tidbits about blue whales that your child will learn. Most of the information is presented in ways that your child can relate to. For example, in addition to telling us that a blue whale can be 100 feet long, the author gives concrete examples of what 100 feet looks like. A lot of the children's books I read to my son are fiction, because that's what a lot of children's books are. Therefore, a book like this a treasure in that it is nonfiction, but still enthralling enough to keep even the pickiest reader's attention. In fact, I'd bet your child won't even realize they are learning as they are reading. The illustrations are nothing to sneeze at either. Done using colored pencils, one can see the labor of love Ms. Desmond put into the details of this book. Highly recommended for both the pictures and the educational value!
