I've been a collector of children's books for about 35 years, and can safely say, I've found a crown jewel. Sadly, Pam Conrad is no longer with us, but her words will live on forever. This is a beautiful story, told in exquisite detail, capturing the romance and serenity of the setting perfectly. Ms. Gallagher's illustrations were what drew me to the book in the first place, and I now have a complete set of all of the books she's illustrated to date. She is unsurpassed in her talent, and ability to create gentle images that will linger in your mind like so many fine memories of childhood. A beautiful experience!

i first saw this book a few months ago, and wasn't able to find it again, till yesterday. it is a beautiful story - although not a true asian fairy tale, it has all the elements. The artwork is what first drew me in - the girl on the cover is so adorable. Definitely a must for anyone's book collection - especially if you have a love of fairy tales, children's books or art books.

Coming from a half-Chinese family, I can pretty qualifiedly say that this is a fun book. I am not "into the culture thing," so I am unlikely to just like the book because it has a Chinese/Euro story history.I simply enjoyed the artwork, quite frankly. I want to see more of this illustrator, who has been seen in Atlantic Monthly also, I believe.
