i only use this as a contingency anchor for canyoneering.. it is a perfect alt way to lower someone from the top if need be. if you are using a smaller rope have fun there is not a whole lot of friction. these are a good secondary limited belay device.

Although the figure 8 belay device isn't too common in the climbing world anymore it still can be used for emergency rappelling. It's very lightweight and I've tested it to hold heavy loads, so I can attest to its quality.

Bottom line is, if you want to start rappelling, get an ATC belay device. Get this if you know how to climb already and just want an emergency device to carry around.
