We have purchased several of these for use with aerial silks / aerial tissu. They are the right size and rating for this purpose.

First Impressions: It's a standard 8 belay/rappel device, but with the Rescue ears, to prevent the dreaded, inescapable Girth Hitch that can occur without it.

Pros: Smooth construction, large openings to allow for 7/16" or 1/2" rope for rescue use. Not much to say beyond that. 22kn BMS (roughly 4500lb breaking strength).

Cons: Not much, except: 22kn BMS/4500lb breaking strength. This unit is great for single person belays or rappels, but in situations where two people may be loading this unit, along with gear, safety factor ratios may come close to being or be breached. There is a very similar unit out there with a breaking strength roughly double this units value for not too much more. If using this in a rescue capacity, check with your team captain or safety officer. If for recreational rappelling/belaying, by all means, this unit will work fine. And you can avoid slipping into a girth hitch!

Overall: A great rappel device, light weight (for its size/volume), that will keep you rappelling for many years. But, for those working in the Search and Rescue capacity, check with team captains or safety officers.

This is the absolute last figure 8 you'll ever need to buy! I've used this to rappel 8 story buildings, belay climbers, and perform basic high and low angle rescues. It is by far the strongest, most versitile, and an absolutely indespensible piece of equipment. Mine has lasted through heavy use for many years, and I still haven't worn through the painted coating!

I have made a career of rappelling and belaying with this device. Yes folks...belaying! I use it for top roping all the time. I do get strange looks from "Wall Rats" who think if it's not a Gri-Gri or ATC it can't possibly work. How wrong they are! This ring is safe, got the ears to prevent the rope from forming a girth hitch while rappelling and allows you to increase the friction by adding another loop if need be. It's not super lightweight like an ATC but if you are bringing groups of people and teaching rappelling it's really the best way to go. Racks are great but more difficult to rig for a beginner. I find the simplicity of this device to be it's best sell. A word of caution: Super fast lightning runs down the rope can burn through the protective coating... so use sense.

This is a rescue-8 that had the best price on Amazon and works well for my aerial silks rig at home.

Having been a USAF Para rescue man for years, and used this device my entire adult life in many life and death rescue situations I can speak to it's strength and security. I have brought fully loaded airman down from many situations, and have configured this in countless ways to get the job done. This is a classic in the SAR field for a reason.

This and three beaners have always been in a pouch on my duty belt for as long as I have been in SAR. Add a pair of as-senders and you can do 90% of any technical rescue that you may be called upon to do.

I had a chance to use these on a rappelling trip just south of Columbus. I bought these because I had a lot of first timers and I wanted to run two ropes. They worked great for all the new users. We could easily run two ropes through the figure eight for added security and control. It also managed the heat a lot better, we had a really tall rappel which usually makes the figure eight over heat.

It works great. It is as advertised. It enabled me to lock myself off while descending so I could use my hands for other things. As usual Amazon was great.
