Product Description

The Blueair 200/300 Series SmokeStopTM filter serves as a replacement filter for the 201, 203, 215B, 250E, 270E, and 303 air purifiers. Specially designed for environments with heavy gaseous pollutants, the SmokeStop filter uses carbon, activated with magnesium dioxide and copper oxide, to remove tobacco smoke, ozone, VOCs in household paints and other chemicals, and odors. In addition, the SmokeStop uses HEPASilent® technology to remove 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns in size from your indoor environment. The gradient structured filter is ultrasonically bonded with fibers free of chemicals and binders, is naturally anti-bacterial, and fiber shedding resistant. It is recommended that you change your Blueair 200/300 Series SmokeStop filter every 6 months. Using an activated carbon filter in your air purifier can result in lower airflow and CADR.

I ordered this not realizing it was only one filter until I got it. I've always bought packages that contained two online. Costco online sells this identical filter for $119 for two filters. On the Costco website the description and model # are not the same so I called Blueair customer service to verify Costco was selling the same filter and Blueair said it was the same. When I received my filters from Costco the packaging is identical, without question the exact same filter. Thanks to Amazon's extended return time for items purchased during the holidays mine is being returned.

As far as the effectiveness of the filter itself I'm on the fence about it. I use my Blueair in a very small bedroom I use for a home office because I'm a smoker and when I polish my desk or clean other things there's still a ton of nictone coating them. I can't really say there's much of an improvement using the Blueair unit or these filters over the lower priced non-Smokestop ones.

While this filter is expensive, I can tell from using it so far that it will last the 6 months mentioned by the manufacturer. Also, the filter is large and well made with 2 lbs. of activated carbon, which is much more than many other filters I looked at. I tried the regular filter first and found that this one definitely provides extra 'oomph' and a better quality of air that I prefer.

4+ stars because costly. That's the only negative...

Bought the "smokestop" to combat fumes & dirt from nearby electrical work & construction. The greasy black residue was CERTAINLY reduced. Oddly, the machines actually does "smell" when there is additional need & turn itself up if it is on "auto" setting!

So, while quite expensive to own & run (we leave them on 24/7) I DO RECOMMEND the smokestop filter (if you need to charcoal layer) & the Blueair machines.

We moved this machine from one area to another of our home, and he dust immediately began to accumulate in the area that no longer had a filter.

We also have the less expensive to purchase Blueair model that you manually adjust (it doesn't have the cutie-pie display on top & a remote control--which we have never ever used). That one works equally well.

Both are relatively innocuous in sound and appearance.

I addition (because we have 2 little kids who've been living off/on through construction) we own a Honeywell machine. Much leas expensive to keep filters going (in this huge round, white machine), but it still keeps our electric bill up. It works equally well on cutting dust, but is TORNADO loud on high.

All of the different certified HEPA air cleaners we have (add a GE & Honeywell to the mix) do keep dust at bay. We find a noticed reduction in seasonal allergies. Even found that those who are "usually" allergic to cats (we have one) always remark that they don't "feel itchy" at our house.*

* We also mop floors & vacuum upholstered furniture occasionally as CEHC (children's environmental health center) recommends this to reduce childhood exposure to household toxins. I'm sure this helps too.

I've been using the cheaper Blueair filter since I'm a nonsmoker and had no need to spend the extra money on this until recently. I bought a bunch of bumper plates online for my new home gym area next to my kitchen and they smell completely noxious (who knows what kinds of chemicals they use in manufacturing those things). It smelled so bad you could smell it on the other side of the house! I bought these cheaper from the store the other reviewer recommended. You don't need their membership to do so online, but there was a surcharge which wasn't a big deal. Anyways,
I moved my Blueair purifier out of my bedroom and right next to my bumper plates when I got the smokestop filter in the mail, and in a few hours the smell was gone. I'm very grateful for this filter! I wouldn't spend the extra money on smokestop filters on a regular basis, but it did the job.

I installed this filter in my Blueair 203 and began experiencing a severe burning sensation in my eyes, nose, throat, & lungs. I began to suspect that this was something more severe then a simple case of activated carbon dust being blown into the air (this is not my first air filter). While re-reading this filters description (on amazons website) the phrase "... fortified with a blend of magnesium dioxide and copper oxide" peaked my curiosity. And so you ask yourself... Is this freaken reviewer seriously expecting me to go through the nightmareish effort of opening a new browser tab, copying the phrase "magnesium dioxide", pasting it into google, and then spending my afternoon getting my Ph.D in chemistry? Fear not! This is the Democratic Republic of Amazon and, I your fellow citizen will do you a solid. On chemicalbook.com the "Health Hazards" section for manesium dioxide reads:

"Inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors or substance may cause severe injury, burns or death. Fire may produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases. Runoff from fire control or dilution water may cause pollution." - http://www.chemicalbook.com/ChemicalProductProperty_EN_CB0117465.htm
