Other highlights include galvanized steel construction, a blue "power on" light, a digital filter-replacement indicator, and easy maintenance--just open the lid, lift out used filters, and drop in replacements at least once every six months. Made of nontoxic polypropylene, the 100-percent-recyclable filter media produces only carbon dioxide and water as it decomposes, plus it's waterproof, which makes it naturally resistant to bacteria, viruses, and mold, without chemical additives or washes. Best of all, the appliance has earned an Energy Star rating, which means it meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, all of which means more comfortable indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. The air purifier measures 13 by 20 by 26 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty.

Incredibly Quiet,

First off I am amazed at how quiet it is. It is only loud on the highest setting, and even that is bearable, it is similar to running a box fan on high. However, as soon as you switch to the next setting down, it is much quieter, about the sound of a low fan or in some cases the sound AC makes when running - I think this is a great setting still good air flow but much too quiet to disturb anyone. The next two settings down, I literally CANNOT HEAR AT ALL! Specifically the next one down, I can only hear if I put my ear up close to it, and the lowest setting, "HEPA silent" I had to feel the airflow to be sure it was running. This is great, compared to my other air purifier (Honeywell 50250N) it is much quieter - it's second highest speed setting is as or more quiet than the lowest setting on my Honeywell, and it is also designed to cover a larger area and has a special filter option for filtering smoke.
I've only just bought it and ran it one day, so I can't say yet for sure how well it will filter the air, but so far it seems to be doing a good job, the air smells fresher and I haven't noticed the occasional smoke order - I'll be able to tell better when it gets colder and the people in the apartment below me and around me smoke more indoors. The reason I got it was particularly to deal with the chain-smoking idiots who live below and around me - whenever it gets cold they pretty much smoke constantly inside their apartment, and all the smoke seems to get filtered by the apartment building design into my apartment. I may update this review after I've used the purifier for a few months.

Wow. I am shocked to say the results were within 2 hours. Current apartment has black mold. Asthma has been horrible wherever I go.. always using an inhaler and constant sneezing, head congestion, chest congestion, not sleeping, missing work, etc. I do have allergies and sinus issues, but... they were controllable and I was rarely using my inhaler until they started ripping the black mold out of the wall / drywall. I bought this to help until I move in a few weeks. I changed my mind about putting it in the current apartment (didn't want the mold in the new air filter). So I took it to the new place. Remember, no matter where I went, my asthma has been an issue (work, shopping, family). I cranked the Blueair on Max. After 2 hours I sat on the floor to unpack a few boxes. I was noticing my breathing was deeper, not shallow from my upper chest, but from my diaphram. I laid on the floor. I could breathe! It was effortless and not a struggle. No wonder I have been so exhausted.. it had become a struggle to breathe regardless where I was. I worked in the new apt for about 6 hrs. NEVER used my inhaler. Went back to current apt... used the inhaler within 2 hours. ?!?! Until I could FINALLY breathe normally, I didn't realize how this had crept up and was getting worse. Honestly I could cry. Because of the Blueair, I will be suing my apartment building. $400 is nothing to sneeze at (!), and money is very tight, but it is so worth feeling better.
It is loud on max speed, but it was not annoying to me. On low speed, I could barely hear it. So I'm sure the sound isn't anything to keep me up at night.

seems to work well,

I originally purchased the whirlpool air purifier ap51030k which is highly recommended by users and Consumer Reports, but it was just too loud even on its lowest setting. It does seem to work well, but it vibrates and has a stiff breeze even on its lowest setting. After more than a week I still could not get used to the noise. In the morning I would wake up and wonder what the sound was even though it is another room. The whirlpool model is more attractive than the blue air and offers more extras (filter replacement light, etc...). But, the blue air model is nearly silent even on the next to lowest level. I leave it on the next to lowest level all the time except for when everyone is out of the house then I turn it on high for several hours. The high setting is extremely loud. Overall, it seems to work well, but I can't say that I notice any difference in air quality for certain. I burn wood to heat my house (via an insert) which is the main reason I purchased the purifier. I am concerned over the ash in the air and the high level of dust. I hope it is helping. There does seem to be less dust, but is it a statistically significant difference-??? It is pretty industrial looking, but I am glad I purchased it.
If you are considering this model and the whirlpool model I would buy this one if you are noise sensitive and the whirlpool model if you are not.
