Product Description

Looking for all the quality of a Blueair purifier on a small scale? The Blueair 203 is the perfect choice for bedrooms, offices or any indoor space up to 240 square feet. With certified results through independent testing, this tiny wonder will have you breathing cleaner, healthier air in no time. For certified testing and results, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), tests the CADR, which is the amount of clean air produced by the air purifier and the rate at which it is produced. The results determined that Blueair has the highest Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) available. An airflow pattern that flows from back to top, the Blueair 203 delivers big performance to small spaces. It’s compact enough to fit along an interior wall or in a corner. Just keep in mind that for maximum airflow, your unit should always be more than four inches from the wall. Capturing 99.97% of airborne particles down to 0.1 microns in size, Blueair’s HEPASilent® technology uses a unique combination of electrostatic and mechanical filtration. With advanced filter media and an encapsulated ion particle charging chamber comes results superior to either mechanical or electrostatic filtration alone. Getting the performance you expect means maintaining your unit. For cleaner, healthier air you can trust, be sure to change your filter at the right time. Our manual units come with a magnetic timer to alert you when your filter needs changing. Simply attach the timer to your air purifier, refrigerator, or anywhere else that will help you remember when it’s time for a change. Plus, the 203 offers easy filter access for simple filter changes anytime. The Blueair 203 air purifier has a compact fan design to expertly handle high-pressure airflow, even for long periods of time. Weighing in at 25 lbs, the lightweight 203 has a convenient handle, so you can move your air purifier around your home with ease.

After allergies triggered asthma for me, I could no longer get by with a cheap air purifier. I researched for hours before deciding on this one. I was looking for something that I could use in the bedroom to help me sleep. This fit the bill on all fronts.

Not only does it clean the air, but produces white noise which helps block out the noise of your neighbors. I will advise, it is quite loud on the medium and high settings, but produces great airflow if you have lower ceilings. You won't even need a ceiling fan with this turned on high.

Upon first use, it smelled, as is common with a new HEPA filter. This disappeared after a day. Within two days, the air was so clean, it was noticeable just by taking a deep breath. Nearly two weeks later and the room still doesn't need to be dusted. This will cut my cleaning frequency down tremendously which is a good thing for my lungs.

The most obvious sign to me that this was a good air purifier was after one week. I would leave the clean air of the bedroom and within 1 hour, I was back to coughing. As you may know, with asthma, it's generally worse while lying down. When I go to bed, I'm coughing from the days exposure to bad air, but within an hour or so, I feel better and sleep the night through. It's only after leaving the bedroom in the morning that I'm back to being sick and asthmatic. I have to give the credit to this air purifier because there is no other explanation.

It comes with a separate digital timer that you can place anywhere. It is magnetic, but I've chosen not to put it on the unit. It counts down the days to filter change and a blue light will come on when it is time to change the filter. The filter on this unit is outstanding.

Although this unit is not quite as quiet as the 400 series Blueair, the 400 series is quite a bit larger and looks like a big huge computer tower. The 200 series is a nicer size and looks more like an air purifier. The sound from the 200 series can actually be quite soothing in terms of helping you to sleep and relax. In my fairly small bedroom, both units seemed to perform equally so I opted for the 203W since it looks better, was cheaper and the filters are a bit cheaper as well.

The Blueair 203 includes an electronic filter change timer as well.

I recommend this unit for the price-the air seems a whole lot fresher and cleaner and my allergies have been alleviated.

I do wish it had one lower setting that was slightly quieter though the lowest setting is by no means loud and most people would not even notice it at all if you had it on in a room and the unit was out of sigh or something like that.

UPDATE (February 2014):
It is now about a little less than a year since the purchase of the unit and it has been working without problems.

After some months of use there was a non-trivial improvement in our toddler's allergies, although it is unclear if this was due to just the Blueair device or other concomitant factors (such as more intensive cleanings, removal of curtains, and bed mite prevention measures), or both. Over the last six months or so we combined such measures with a change of all vacuum cleaners to true HEPA models and vacuuming the kids' rooms every evening -- this has been accompanied by a major improvement but we are aware this could also be due to other factors (such as seasonal changes). Time may tell.

[ORIGINAL REVIEW]

I bought it about a month ago to aid the allergy treatment of our toddler. The unit was delivered on time and was very well packaged. It came with one HEPA filter, a "days to filter change" display counter to remind changing the particle filter every 6 months --an explicit requirement to preserve the unit's warranty, see below--, and some printed material (user guide, warranty, and a pitch to join a Blueair filter Club).

The dimension specs given in the webpage are true. It is a steel-sheet cabinet, whose size (comparable to that of a bulky floor-standing PC) adds to the look of being solidly built; its weight is easily managed by an adult. The unit operation is controlled by a mechanical rotary switch (off, low, medium, high) ; it is remarkably quiet at the lowest speed, which is labeled as 'HEPA silent' on the rotary knob markings. A blue LED on the front signals when the unit is on, with a measured illuminance of 2.7 lux. Although under daytime (photopic) vision such blue light is rather dim --e.g.

I can say that wholeheartedly and with experience as I have owned or tried several other HEPA type air filters and a well known brand ionic only air filter. With this purchase, I also did some checking on Consumer Reports.

First off, it's a high quality air filter made of metal, which means no plastic stink like most every other plastic HEPA filter I have tried, and this was one of the main reasons I bought it. It also means this thing can last for a long time and not end up holding dirt like the plastic filters eventually do.

On low, it is quiet for a HEPA type air filter. The sound reminds me of AC air coming out of a vent except a little louder. My husband and I are light sleepers and can sleep easily with this on low. This was one of the reasons I kept it after I bought it. The wonderful quality of the air it produces was another. I have sinus infections and need clean air. I use this unit (and the SmokeStop activated carbon filter) and can tell a big difference in my breathing between using and not using this air filter.

The medium and high settings are loud but as I understand it are meant to be used when you need to clean the room quickly and thoroughly and also to keep the room cleaner throughout the day.

Things to keep in mind about this unit is that it is for use in a small room (175 sq. ft. manufacturer recommended, up to 225 sq. ft. CADR suggested, as also listed on the manufacturer's website) and the replacement filters, while pricey, are larger, better quality and last longer than other filters I've had to deal with. Less replacement, less waste.

Cosmetically, as you can see, it's only fair. It is about the size and shape of a very large computer.
