5.0 out of 5 stars Say goodbye to "Ewww... what's that smell??!"
I tried the Smokestop filter for the Blueair 402 model, but these are the exact same, only different sized to accommodate the larger models. If you have any issue with odors or cigarette smoke, this is the filter to get.

1.0 out of 5 stars SmokeStop filters not as good as others
First of all, I have been using the BlueAir 500 series air purifer for almost three years for pet dander and smoking on the weekends. I stumbled across these filters and was pleasantly surprised at the price, which was 50 to 80 dollars cheaper. I tried the Smokestop filter for the Blueair 402 model, but these are the exact same, only different sized to accommodate the larger models. If you have any issue with odors or cigarette smoke, this is the filter to get.

I had an extreme situation where there was a methane leak in my neighborhood. The fumes were claimed by authorities to be "safe," but I and many other neighbors suffered from headaches, dizziness and nauseousness. The fumes burned at your eyes and it was pretty unbearable. Well, turns out this was to recur for the next few nights, and with no other place to stay, I invested in a Smokestop filter to temporarily replace my particle filter. It was INCREDIBLE. Immediately, all the fumes in the room were swept up by the Blueair and I was able to spend my time in this room with no health issues. (Whenever I left the room to another part of the house, all the previously mentioned symptoms returned.)

What's the difference between the Smokestop and the regular particle filter? This filter has a layer of activated charcoal that captures odors, and still has the familiar particle filtering layers, all built into one. Simple concept, and yes, a lot of other air cleaners have charcoal, but this one is specific to the Blueair and it's unique air-cleaning technology. After my experience with the noxious fumes in my home, I am completely sold on the effectiveness of this product. If you have any odor issues in your home, then spring a little extra dough for these filters. They are well worth the extra bucks.

First of all, I have been using the BlueAir 500 series air purifer for almost three years for pet dander and smoking on the weekends. I stumbled across these filters and was pleasantly surprised at the price, which was 50 to 80 dollars cheaper. Purchased the Smokestop filters in Mar 2011 and although the outer mesh on the airflow out side was white and not black and its texture was not as course, the rest of the filter seemed like previous ones I had bought from another online retailer. Used it for 2 weeks in two rooms for pet dander and then on Friday/Saturday nights in a basement for a total of 3 packs from 1 smoker over the two weekends. When moved the air purifer to the other rooms where I don't smoke, within 10 minutes the room smelled like smoke. Amazon was really great about providing a replacement set of filters but again, these performed the same and within 10 minutes, the room would smell like smoke. I have gone back to purchasing the filters from the other online retailer and all is well again. I don't know if I received two bad set of filters, if these filters just have less of the activated carbon, or if the activate carbon is different. Sure, the 3 filters cost me 50 dollars to 80 dollars more from the other online retailer, but they work great by filtering the smoke from the air and keeping the smoke in the filter.

5.0 out of 5 stars works better than the particle filter, November 8, 2010

The other regular particle filter version works great at filtering out dust. However, with this smokestop filter, it gets rid of odors and general outdoor smog that gets its way into your house. The room smells better after running it for less than an hour.

Plus: it makes the unit run quieter as the carbon filter section actually acts like a sound baffle to block out some of the fan noise. Usually with the regular particle filter, even on low speed for my 650E, I can still hear a whirling fan sound. With this filter, I can hardly hear it and can leave it on low for the whole night. With the regular particle filter version, when the electronic sensor would detect VOCs (volatile organic compounds)/odor, it would kick the fan on high and it would be a long time until the odor is diffused/lessened, for the fan to slow down. With the smokestop filter, the VOC/odor gets reduced in a few minutes and the cleaner does not stay on high for long.

Minus: it reduces the airflow output. The carbon filter section actually restricts airflow quite a bit, I would say more than half the airflow is reduced. However, it still does its job. And of course it costs about twice as much as the regular particle filter.

In my opinion, if your blueair electronic sensor (on the 550E/650E models) detects VOCs/odors more than it detects dust, then this is the filter to get!

The smoke from our neighbors wood stove flows into our house during the winter months. These filters keep the smoke from spreading throughout the house and makes the air breathable. Very effective.

If you own a Blueair, you need an actual Blueair filter for your machine. This is it. You already spent hundreds on one of the best freaking air purifiers out there, so why not splurge and get the smokestop filters. That is my reasoning. Love them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life Saver, March 1, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Blueair Smokestop Filter for Blueair 500/600 Series Air Purifiers, Set of 3 (Kitchen)
I have congestive lung disease and live in an apartment. When a smoker moved in to the apartment below mine, smoke would come up through the floor. I was literally choking to death and had to keep my windows open, even on the coldest of days, so that I could breathe. I was ready to move. Then a friend told me about the Blueair with the Smokestop filters. It is a lifesaver. I can keep my windows closed and don't have to move. My unit stays on its low setting until it detects smoke in the air. Then it switches into its high setting to clean the air before it can reach my lungs. Once the air is clean, it automatically switches back to its low setting. Thank you Blueair. Words can't describe my gratitude for such a life saving product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Blueair Smokestop Filter 500/600 series, November 11, 2011

This Amazon shipment came with a previous generation of filter. The airflow is definitely reduced by the more substantial build of the filter itself, but the good news is that because the airflow is reduced, so is the noise. You have to turn up your Blueair another notch to get comparable air flow compared to the Particle Filter, but the sound is no louder. I do have an issue with the white border around these filters, which stick out like a sore thumb. I sure hope the new generation filters come with the old charcoal border which does a much better job in blending with the BlueAir unit. These filters do the job if you're not worried so much about the aesthetics~and the price is excellent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works very well, October 9, 2011
This review is from: Blueair Smokestop Filter for Blueair 500/600 Series Air Purifiers, Set of 3 (Kitchen)
The only reason for 4 stars is that the price keeps going up and they are very pricey. They work very well at keeping the air clean.

I just purchased a BlueAir 503 model and I know this sounds like a silly question, but can someone please tell me if I'm supposed to take the cardboard box off of each of the (3) filters? Any help appreciated. Thanks.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unusable due to strong oder of filters themselves, January 3, 2011
This review is from: Blueair Smokestop Filter for Blueair 500/600 Series Air Purifiers, Set of 3 (Kitchen)
I had high expectations for these filters, but they are absolutely unusable because they fill the room with a noxious fake-vanilla odor. In contrast to the statements in the owners manual (which claims the odor will only last a short while), this odor remained very strong for over a month of continuous use on the highest fan speed. Eventually, BlueAir sent me a replacement set of filters because the first set I had were supposedly defective. The odor from the set of replacement filters was even worse. All subsequent attempts to contact BlueAir customer service regarding this issue have gone unanswered.

I have no idea if these filters are at all effective in removing odors because they have introduced a much stronger, equally offensive smell into the room where the filter is. If you have a room that you'd like to reek of fake vanilla, buy this product, or perhaps just a $5 Glade plug-in.
