About the Author

Jean Giraud lives one of the most interesting double lives in comics history. Under his own name, he is the artist on the legendary 'Blueberry' western and under the pseudonym of Moebius, he is one of the most innovative artists of the 20th century. After having followed several art studies since a very young age, Giraud drew his first comics and illustrations for Far-West, Sitting-Bull, Fripounet et Marisette, Ames Vaillantes and Coeurs Vaillants in the mid 1950s. He learned the finer points of the comics profession from Jije however, who he assisted on an episode of the western Jerry Spring. When Jean-Michel Charlier offered Jije the scenario for a new western series, Jije proposed Giraud and Blueberry was born. The series's first episode Fort Navajo premiered in Pilote magazine in 1963. 'Blueberry soon became the highlight of European western comics. It got several spin-offs throughout the years, such as La Jeunesse de Blueberry. Giraud didn't work on this series, but he did take on writing the scenarios of another spin-off from 1991: Marshall Blueberry' (artwork William Vance and later Michel Rouge). Since 1969, Jean Giraud has alternated between working on his more mainstream comics and the experimental work under the name Moebius. Besides 'Blueberry', Giraud and Charlier took on the Jim Cutlass series in 1976. After one episode, Christian Rossi took over the artwork and Giraud took on the writing of the series.
