2.0 out of 5 stars Really, really bad early Howard novel
Unwed mother-to-be Kathleen goes into labor prematurely while traveling on a snow blanketed deserted highway. Enter neonatal specialist Derek Taliferro (who only a couple years earlier was the 16 year old with a crush on Sarah in "Sarah's Child"), happens upon her and helps her deliver her baby girl. A wonderful story that will warm your heart. A young mother finds herself in labor during a terrible blizzard and is rescued by an intelligent, handsome, and charismatic doctor who happens to specialize in babies in trouble. He rescues the mother, delivers her premature baby under stormy conditions and marries the deserted and destitute mother to provide the baby with all the advantages a doctor can give it. But his heart is captured by the young mother and he waits for her to find her way to him. A charming and heartwarming story of family love and support, and of a man's dedication and honor.

5.0 out of 5 stars A tear-jerker that I'd read over and over again., April 27, 2000
From the first page, this story captured my heart. I read it years ago and have never seen it since. Being a mother, I felt for the heroine, who is in destitute and in labor. When the hero helps her, then marries her, I felt a sigh of relief. The heroine's life hasn't been easy and she's afraid to reach out. When she reveals her past, the hero decides that HE is the one for her and her baby, despite the heroine's murky beginnings. I felt a tear in my eye as the author weaved a gentle, healing tale of love. I'm buying it and adding it to my collection.

Then Derek decides that he loves baby Risa and wants to provide for her (since he is a doctor and all). He sets about forcing Kathleen into a marriage of convenience so that he can be a father to Risa. And as crazy as it sounds, the two start with a convenience and end up falling in love with each other.

Trite and syrupy, this story lacks plotting and cohesion. It never really captured my attention and I found myself laughing in parts where the author probably did not intend to create comedy. Definitely not one of Howard's better early works, which is why it's not so easy to find. Better to stick with her McKenzie series if straight romance is what you are looking for.

The character Derek was introduced in the book Sarah's Child. He was interesting, intriguing, different and wonderful. I was eager to learn more about him and see him in action in this book, but I was disappointed. This story was about a Doctor falling in love at first sight. Derek was the doctor, but this book didn't go into anything special about him. The story was ok, but because I wanted more character development about Derek and didn't get it, I rated it lower. This is a short story, only 93 pages long. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: one. Copyright: 1987. Genre: contemporary romance.

It was a good story, but too short. Derek was a special person and he needed a longer, more developed story.

First, I love Linda Howard's novels. Bluebird Winter is Derek's story. We first meet him in Sarah's Child where we learn he is a fantastic young man. It's too bad his story is not more developed and given more than 100 pages! It's a shame. That said, it was a nice little story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bluebird Winter - Linda Howard, October 9, 2008
This review is from: Bluebird Winter (Mass Market Paperback)
I happened to have loved this story. It gave me an update on not only Derek, but his mother Marcy, Sarah, Missy, Jed, Roam, Max and his wife. Ever since I first read Sarah's Child, I was fasinated on how Derek would turn out. I remember he had told Sarah when she was pregnant with Missy how he thought about waiting for her to grow up. But, instead, he fell in love with a wonderful young woman who not only needed to be loved, but was learning to love and trust in the meantime.

My hat is off to Linda Howard for creating such a wonderful Christmas story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Sweet ending, May 27, 2011

This was Derek Taliferro's story, the final book in the Spencer-Nyle series by Linda Howard, having finished college and medical school and practicing at a Dallas hospital. He's a neonatal specialist who, on his way home from visiting his mother for the Christmas holidays, comes upon Kathleen Fields stranded in her car during a blizzard and in the throes of premature labor. Derek delivers the baby at her home and, lovestruck with both Kathleen and the baby, takes them with him to Dallas.

This was a sweet, improbable story but a nice wrap-up to the series with one of my most favorite characters at the forefront. I don't believe in love at first sight romances so the premise was off for me. With that said, it was a quick, easy read I enjoyed. "

This review is from: Bluebird Winter (Mass Market Paperback)
If you love Sarah's Child or Almost Forever, this is a must read--It is the story of Derek finding love--He is in the other 2 books--I really enjoyed it although it was a lot shorter than the other books I just wish there was more to it but other than that it was great!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful romance!, March 2, 2008
This review is from: Bluebird Winter (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved Derek's story as much as Sarah's. I fell in love with him when he first appeared and couldn't wait for him to grow into his own story.
I haven't read Max's story, but after Sarah and Derek, I can't wait.
Beautiful, compassionate, lovely. Derek is the perfect man!
