Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

If present trends continue, Mr. Bluebird may not be sitting on anyone's shoulder. Loss of habitat, increased competition for food, and the poisons sprayed on lawns to make them green and pretty all threaten this songbird that is common only in the western hemisphere. In what amounts to a bluebird awareness book, Toops spotlights both the species' natural history and what certain private citizens are doing to ensure its future. The natural history chapters are pretty run-of-the-mill, but the nine small ones on what those citizens are doing are fascinating. Most of their activity involves installing boxes in which the birds may lay eggs and raise young; in many cases, this simple measure has lured the bluebird back to areas from which it has been absent for more than a half century. Color photos profusely illustrate the book, and because the bluebird is a very pretty, make it quite spectacular. Toops and those she profiles deserve a round of applause for trying to save the no-longer-so-common bluebird. Jon Kartman

Review

Bluebirds evoke gentle and winning images; but how can we better understand their habits and habitats? Toops provides a fine natural history which blends close-up bluebird shots with reviews of their life cycles, interactions with humans, and threats to their survival. Included are tips on how to attract bluebirds; but the foundation of the book lies in its excellent photos and in-depth regional coverages of the bird. -- Midwest Book Review

If you are a bit interested in bluebirds or obsessed with bluebirds and can purchase every book that is Great. But if you are to have only one book "Bluebirds Forever" is that book. The best information in 1976 and until now I believe was "The Blubird" by Lawrence Zeleny. (I think it is no longer being printed). Within one book Connie M. Toops has included interesting informative information and beautiful color photos with the added bonus of several different quality bluebird box plans as well as information and plans about guards for those boxes. Bluebirds have been a part of my life for many years and I have several good books about bluebirds still when I purchased this book recently I was so excited and pleased to add it to my collection.

I really liked the photographs in this book....they were wonderful, and her information regarding bluebird behavior and habitat, especially the section about the bluebird trail, was very good. I have a small bluebird trail, and I am considering expanding it. I read everything I can get my hands on, on monitoring bluebird trails and what to look for. I hope the author publishes more books on bluebirds, because she definitely knows her subject matter.

Despite its age, Bluebirds Forever is just as relevant and helpful today as it was in 1997. Those who love bluebirds will enjoy the fantastic photographs and learn from the expert advice from the author and her contacts.

This is a book one can read from cover to cover, absorbing bluebird wisdom and taking in the often breathless photographs. As a bonus I found a Bluebirds Forever pull-out supplement in the back of the book with bluebird nest box plans and detailed diagrams.

Mrs. Spudman and I both enjoyed this book highly and recommend it to all bluebird fans.
