Great Addition for the Devoted Spike Jones Fans,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Bluebirds (Audio CD)
This album makes a great addition to the library of die-hard Spike Jones fans. However, it would not be the best choice for someone who is just buying thier first Spike album. You'll notice that song titles are repeated on several tracks. These are rejected and/or alternative takes. For example the disk contains the "less rude" cut of Der Fuerher's Face that the record company really wanted to release in 1942. This collection is of the "vintage" Spike, being recorded between 8/1941 and 9/1945. Many of the cuts are a little less wild than some of the later stuff. This album does include a previously unissued track: "Pack Up Your Troubles"

How City Slickers' recordings evoluate,

Another Harlequin CD to join the others in the disc rack, having about the same great... and less great properties. The great aspects: it is great to hear (dated) alternate versions of well- (and less well-)known Spike Jones records, because it gives more insight in the qualities of the whole crew. Great too, to hear how gags and other musical ideas come and go. And, the real Harlequin trademark: the very accurate remastering of this material! Less great aspect: still this apparently well-furnished liner notes, that are only really helpful for people who know Jack Mirtle's bio/discography from memory. Because, as with the other Harlequin discs, the notes still refer to facts that are not known by the common Spike Jones fan. Especially if this fan is European, and misses some of the American mass-cultural background (about songs, performers...) And, at the time of this writing, the Mirtle book is still out of stock, or out of print, or out of whatever... out of my library anyway...
