Spinster sleuth Hildegarde Withers and Inspector Oscar Piper are on the case of murder among the dog breeders, in a case reminiscent of S.S. Van Dine's "The Kennel Murder Case" (1933).

4.0 out of 5 stars Miss Withers in Short Story Read by Robot, September 29, 2010

Those who have a taste for old 'B' movies will remember Miss Withers from a successful series of 6 or 7 films done in the 1930's with the redoubtable Edna Mae Oliver as the original and best leading woman and others, including the gifted Zasu Pitts, taking taking her place after the first three or four entries. James Gleason, seasoned character actor and screen writer, played the exasperated police officer and ever-greater friend to our heroine.
The story is easily read in an evening (with time left over for a favorite television show); I let the male-voiced robot read it for me. Took somewhat longer, of course, than reading it myself, but the electronic surrogate did a decent job as such soft-ware goes. Almost every word was understandable, using headphones, but be forewarned, it takes some getting used to if you have not been accustomed to the form. Amazon can do better, and, presumably will, if they continue what they call an "experiment" in later generations. For those whose eyes need as much tender loving care as they can get, it is a good way to save vision for more important reading. Of course, such electronic devices are not yet within shouting distance in quality to the average actor performed audio-book as can be found in Amazon owned Audible books.
The story is uncomplicated in plot and quite typical of what is to be found in full book form. About the only major difference in characterization is the almost complete absence of Piper's (the police officer) frustrated cantankerousness when Miss Withers comes up with her own contrary analyses of events. The plot is put in motion by a complaint which comes to the police department that someone is killing dozens of neighborhood dogs by poisoning them. The Big Dog Show is coming up and to cancel it would cost money and jobs as well as frustrating those who have entered dogs in the Show and those dog-lovers who are fans. Miss Withers has a plan for solving the crimes.
The tale is told in straight-forward fashion with little misdirection or complex motivation.
It is an enjoyable hour or two and I can commend it to followers of non-violent crime stories. What the difference may be that causes a fifty cent difference in price for different Kindel editions, I cannot say. I should think cheaper is better in a story without chapter headings and with identical voices and pacing.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Blueblood Murders, May 2, 2011

Loved the B-movies wirh Edna M Oliver & even Helen Broderick. The novels are light fun, too, but this is just a sweet little short story that I polished off waiting for the bus home. Definitlely overpriced by 300%.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too short, April 6, 2011

This is just a magazine short story which has the flavor of the novels. I felt cheated as it took about 20 minutes to read.
