Book Description

August 28, 2000
The remarkable story of Bluefield represents a unique combination of geology, geography, and opportunity. Once just the confluence of a handful of family farms in southern West Virginia, Bluefield was put on the map, literally,

in the 1880s, when the Norfolk & Western Railway came to town. The company's influence on the rural landscape was overwhelming, and soon, Bluefield was transformed into the center of a coal-fired universe and became a major thoroughfare for the then-thriving mining industry.

Though the company--not the coal--was king in Bluefield, enterprising men and women could, and did, share in its

success. The city evolved into a successful supply center for the enormous network of towns that sprung up almost overnight throughout the region's coalfields. For the next 60 years, Bluefield experienced dramatic growth, enticing a diverse group of newcomers who helped to build the strong cultural heritage that continues to play a prominent role in the community to the present day.

"Bluefield" is a great collection of many photos of the Bluefield, WV area covering many years. The price is a little steep for a paperback book, but this is a must for anyone interested in Bluefield.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bill Archer is a prince of a nice guy........, December 19, 2008
By
This review is from: Bluefield (WV) (Images of America) (Paperback)
.....and has created a treasure. The first time I ever met Bill, he helped me find an old, out of use, cemetery so I could look for my Confederate great-grandfather's grave. Effort for a stranger. I grew up in Bluefield, WV [born in 1947]; you would barely recognize it today...downtown is a shell of its former self. But, once upon a time, it was different. Far different.

This wonderful work goes back to way before I was born; still, many of the people and places touch my own memory. Dr. John Nash, is, naturally, represented. [Him, I have never met].

The book and photo reproductions are of first rate quality. So are the stories, with proper homage to the late, great, Eddie Steele, several of whose photos are used. This is a real journey in a time machine. If you happen to buy your copy there, take it to the "Daily Telegraph" office on Bluefield Ave., and Bill will sign it for you. He is a great guy, and a treasure house of local legend.
