If you can read even just a little music and would like to know the melody of a song, this is the book for you. Being relatively new to bluegrass, I do not know names of songs but do recognize the melodies. With this book, even not knowing the melody is no problem. Play the melody straight out of the book! Bonus, if you need an impromptu solo, play the melody! This book...

The only limitation of this book is that the songs are only in standard notation, and some of my fellow banjo pickers may be put off by that. However, it has an extensive collection of bluegrass tunes; and the chords/melodies are very accurate. Having the music in standard notation is actually very helpful if you are one for using any of the available computer programs...

This book has really benefited me in learning traditional bluegrass and gospel songs. If you don't read music... well, the chords are displayed above the music notation and lyrics as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a must-have book for Bluegrass, January 5, 2007

I think the other reviewer might have meant to give this 5 stars. This is one of two books that it seems every Bluegrass player owns. Most copies have many pages turned down and look like they've been left out by the campfire, which they probably have. The other book to own is the Bluegrass Songbook by Pete Wernick. Together these books will give you a great source for the words to many Bluegrass songs without the annoying pop-ups of most online lyrics sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST..., November 3, 2007
This review is from: Bluegrass Fakebook: 150 All-Time Favorites, Seventh Edition (Paperback)
I think this book is a must have for bluegrass jams. I love the selection for this book, it has a lot of old classic and a lot of newer songs that wouldn't think that would have made it. None the less its one of the better ones out there.

The book contains a lot of great tunes, arrangements and ideas for old timey flatpicking. there are some errors in the tabulature. If there was another like thsi, I would definitely buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding, June 29, 2009
This review is from: Bluegrass Fakebook: 150 All-Time Favorites, Seventh Edition (Paperback)
For those who wish to advance their musical ability, for many of the "old time" standards, in either guitar, banjo or mandolin, then this book is a must. Disregard all the negative crap, from others, who may have been disappointed. I play a variety of instruments, and this book took me home, as I feel confident, that it will for you as well. As always, I'm never disappointed in purchasing directly from Amazon. I never have to wait weeks, for them to ship. The price was right, and as usual, the shipping was lightening fast.

Take it to every jam or hang out at home and play the good stuff to your heart's content. A must have for jams. Very helpful with chords and lyrics.

The only limitation of this book is that the songs are only in standard notation, and some of my fellow banjo pickers may be put off by that. However, it has an extensive collection of bluegrass tunes; and the chords/melodies are very accurate. Having the music in standard notation is actually very helpful if you are one for using any of the available computer programs for transcribing sheet music into other keys. There are also no less than 3 or 4 albums listed for each song in the book. I liked the Bluegrass Songbook fairly well, but you can't learn from that strange, hand-written tab unless you know how the song's melody flows. My point is that you can learn songs from this book as readily as you can learn them from the Bluegrass Songbook, so don't be alarmed that there is no tab.

Not much new in this collection. Of course, it might be that I have spent so much money on Bluegrass books that I have them all - except the new stuff. I liked the author's collection of hymns much better.
