Editorial Reviews

Review

"[The book] paints a poignant picture of cultural dislocation. Junior and his family have been forced to live in a camp for Japanese Americans during World War II. The harsh desert outpost is not the kind of "camp" Junior had in mind, but a gift from his grandfather helps him endure the confinement." -- Teaching tolerance, Spring, 1994

From the Publisher

The publication of this book was lauded on the front page of the Pacific Citizen, the newspaper of the Japanese American Citizen's League. It was the first picture book designed to introduce young people to the history of the internment of Japanese Americans during World War Two. While later picture books have used the internment as a setting for stories that could easily be set in a variety of time periods, this remains the only picture book to focus upon the internment and its impact upon the families who were forced to endure it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best children's book about internment I've ever seen., May 4, 1998

I teach 4th grade. I love using this book to introduce my class to the history of Japanese American internment during World War Two because unlike other internment stories, this one focuses on what internment was all about. Other books may use the internment as a setting (The Bracelet by Yoshiko Uchida) but those stories could easily be set anywhere, anytime. Blue Jay In The Desert doesn't try to be about anything but what it was like to be interned and the need for hope that oppressed minorities need to have to survive. Highly recommend this book.

This is a beautiful story. I have the birds my own great-grandfather carved in camp. It is a beautiful tale that really reminds us why the internment was so painful.
