The best children's book about internment I've ever seen., May 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Bluejay in the Desert (Hardcover)
I teach 4th grade. I love using this book to introduce my class to the history of Japanese American internment during World War Two because unlike other internment stories, this one focuses on what internment was all about. Other books may use the internment as a setting (The Bracelet by Yoshiko Uchida) but those stories could easily be set anywhere, anytime. Blue Jay In The Desert doesn't try to be about anything but what it was like to be interned and the need for hope that oppressed minorities need to have to survive. Highly recommend this book.

Touching, sensitive view of the internment from
a child's eyes. Very hopeful and positive. Great
paintings!

My favorite story about the internment, May 27, 1999

This is a beautiful story. I have the birds my own great-grandfather carved in camp. It is a beautiful tale that really reminds us why the internment was so painful.

The best picture book on the internment!, May 26, 1999

As a teacher, this is the best book I've found about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II. It doesn't merely use the internment as a setting or background. I find it very useful for stimulating class discussion. I recommend this book to anyone teaching about the internment.
