Editorial Reviews

Beginner/Intermediate. Heres a great way to expand your blues playing in every key! Slow tempos for all levels of ability. Try playing some of the tougher keys without looking at the music and see just how fast your ear takes over. Youll find yourself gaining confidence very quickly and that will greatly improve your soloing. Charlie Parker learned the Blues in all 12 keys before he learned anything else. Transposed for all instruments. Each key contains a different blues melody and two compatible chord/scale progressions.

Rhythm Section: James Williams (p); Bob Cranshaw (b); Mickey Roker (d)

I panned Aebersold's Volume 2 "Nothin but Blues" because it was inappropriate for beginners. Volume 42 is much better and I highly recommend it. It is a great teaching tool: just start at track one and play to the end, then start over again. Tempos are moderate and the accompaniment is acoustic (again in contrast to the electric pianos of Vol. 2). Although the changes are not the absolute simplest form of the blues - for example, the second bar is always the iv chord - they should not present any problems to the beginner.

If you want to learn how to play jazz blues, this is essential. Just don't skip the less familiar keys!

As an aspiring blues musician these drills are just what I needed to augment my weekly lessons. You will enjoy playing along with the CD.I also downloaded a program called . The Amazingslowdowner that you can import the CD and speed up or slow down the music without changing the pitch. Helps immensley.

...which is played to the rhythm tracks here. Its by Lennie Niehaus, playing alto sax
in a sort of Charlie Parker style. Very useful. Listed as "Lennie Niehaus Plays The Blues"
in the books section of this website.

My son asked for this to help him with playing jazz music. It was recommended to him by a music teacher. He's enjoyed using it.
