This review is from: Blues in the Basement (Audio CD)
This album is arguably the best funk instrumental blues album on the market. Ian Smith is brilliant alto/tenor sax player, relatively young and full of energy. He and his band back up some of the best rock musicians out there today, unsung stars in the background. It's great to hear them showcased in this album, and to get knocked off your seat by the grooves and the solos. Ian's background- you'll have to research the rest of the band yourself- was trained first as a classical woodwind player, then as a jazz alto player. He's hung in NY for years, and the complex concepts behind the burning funk soul of this recording is impossible to dis.
