Delta Blues For The New Century,
This review is from: The Blues and Beyond (Audio CD)
I played in a band with Billy back in 1973. At that time he had only been playing guitar for about two years and he was smokin'. Here he is after twenty seven years of giggin' in the smokey bars and honky-tonks around the Mississippi Delta and you can hear the heartache and frustration in every note he sings or plays. He starts off with "Another Blues Singer". You might remember this from the "Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute". Well, here it is with Billy's own heartfelt tribute to blues singers the have gone on to their reward, incuding his Dad and Kevin Mills ( his bass player and right arm for 25 years). The personal pain in his playing shines through on this one. Billy's tender side shows up on "Peace Of Mind" a slow song with a 50's feel. "Walnut Street" has a "live" feel, as he tells about the current music scene in Greenville,Mississippi where at the Walnut Street Bait Shop you are likely to hear Billy "cuttin' heads" with his well worn guitar on stage with any number of local and national celebrities such as Little David, John Horton, Willie Foster, or Eden and Boogaloo Ames.I've been there to witness when the "magic" happens, and Billy captures a little of that here. My personal favorite is "Dust Me Off". Billy REALLY rocks on this song about who's the boss. " Highway 82 Blues " lets him stretch out on a slow blues about the highway that runs through his and B.B.King's hometown of Indianola, Mississippi , where Billy has opened for B.B.'s annual home- coming for as long as I can remember. If you want a taste of Blues with a little spice then I recommend this one.

I'm a huge Stevie Ray fan and I never thought I would ever be impressed by another guitar player but Billy is "The Blues Man". He is the most exciting guitar player I have ever heard and if you don't think so, well your just not with it. All I want to know is, when the next Album is due?

I highly recommend this cd for anyone who appreciates music from the heart of the artist straight to the heart of the listener....it is really awesome. Keep your eyes and ears on this musician, he is going to be HOT, HOT,HOT! It is one of the best guitar styles of any guitarist I have ever heard. His voice is gutsy. Take a listen.....you can feel his life in listening to his music, and it gives me chills........

I became a fan of Billy Marquis on April 14 when a friend let me borrow her cd. I had never heard of Billy before then but am telling everyone who is a blues fan to buy this cd. I was a fan of The Tangents and can hear Charlie's voice at times while listening to these tracks. You won't be disappointed if you like electric delta blues.

Blues - Billy Marquis Style,
By Euphus Ruth (Mississippi Delta) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Blues and Beyond (Audio CD)
The Blues is not new to Billy Marquis, in fact he's lived it off and on most of his adult life. This Indianola, Mississippi born musician grew up surrounded by the sounds of the Mississippi Delta and stories of the legends before him, unphased by this he cut his own nitch into the local scene and put it to work in every juke joint, honky tonk, pool room and establishment he could get his gritty guitar playing in. "The Blues And Beyond" reflects this hard-edged playing Billy has grown accoustomed to in the non-forgiving Mississippi Delta. Buy the CD and experience another side of the Delta music scene and visit Walnut Street in Greenville, Mississippi and catch Billy laying down his style of blues for all to hear.

I have know Billy all my life and I am best friends with his daughter. I think this CD is the best blues CD that I have ever heard. He has changed my whole prospective of the blues. On the weekends when we go out we ride around listening to it. My favorite song is song three. Billy is a wonderful man and he sings so good. You should really buy his CD.

Billy Marquis is full of soul and rythym. This CD sings to your heart. I caught his show a couple of weeks ago, I could feel it in my bones. I finally purchased another CD to keep in both vehicles. My husband and I would fight over who was gonna get to listen to it everday. If you like good Southern Blues, I highly recommend this CD. This guy is definately going to make it big.

I've know Billy all my life, and have played with him, off and on, for almost half of it. What's on this CD is what Billy lives, the Blues. The songs he writes come from his heart, and believe me, he's got a big one. This is as close to one of his live shows as you can get. Buy it!
