Product Description

Amazon.com Review
Blue's Alphabet Book is an early childhood game all the way, teaching small--and we stress small--children how to recognize their ABCs and spell basic words. It's done by way of six very simple games that shouldn't put too much strain on little brains.

Most of the games stress simple recognition of letters, such as a xylophone game, where the computer plays a sequence of lettered keys, which kids must duplicate. There's also a leaf game, where a basket is marked with a letter, which kids must use to catch a leaf with that same letter on it. Other games teach a bit more, such as a soup game that helps kids to spell small words, and a memory game that has them trying to remember which bubbles contain which letters.

Blue's Alphabet Book contains some fun music and a small amount of voice acting, but the youngest children will need a parent to help them name the letters and sound out the words they spell. In other words, little ones should be able to play this title alone, but will absorb more with the help of an older onlooker. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Colorful graphics
  • Games will help kids come to recognize their ABCs
Cons:
  • Few voice samples

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent game for preschoolers!, February 10, 2001
In preparation for an overseas flight, I bought a Game Boy and three games for my 4 1/2 year old (with the intent of sharing with the 2 1/2 year old). Compared to the other games, the Blue Clues game had a number of excellent games, that TRULY involved pre-reading learning skills, and the graphics were colorful and engaging.

My 4 1/2 year old quickly understood the activities and stayed glued to the game, well, for the duration of the trip! (It was just what we needed). The 2 1/2 year old couldn't understand the "rules" but he was happy (for 15 minutes at a time) to just push buttons and watch Steve and his pals.

To the game's authors: Bravo!!! Job well done!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun and non-violent alternative, December 19, 2000
If you're concerned with the amount of violence introduced to children in most video games, this game is for you and your child. Blue's Clues Alphabet Book focuses on learning activities like letter recognition, memory skills, sequencing, and spelling. The game allows for free play, where a child can choose any game, or play the actual Blue's clues game, where the child can hunt for clues to the missing alphabet pages, just like the show. It is very easy and simple to follow so your child feels successful everytime. The graphic accuracy and color are surprisingly vivid for a gameboy color game. (If you've been able to see any of the games on this console, you know what I mean.)

My 3yr. 10 mo. old son loves this game. He was so excited when we presented it to him, we couldn't get him to stop long enough to eat. I, as his mom, feel better that there are people out there who make non-violent games like this one. As parents , any help we can get is welcome. I highly recommend this game for children 3 and up as a first game if you're contmeplating buying a gameboy color for your child.

A plus for moms and dads, take the gameboy and this game along when grocery shopping. It'll make waiting in line less stressful.(Maybe a little cheaper; they may not notice the candy on the impulse buy section.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A terrific introduction to Gameboy for younger kids, February 9, 2001
By I'm a Mom (Western Washington) - See all my reviews
I purchased this game for my son (age 4.5) for Christmas and am very pleased with it. I had been hesitant about introducing him to the Gameboy at this age, particularly since the games I have seen rely so heavily on violence or "levels" the player must reach to go on in the game. Blue's Clues is an exception. My son has no problem navigating the screens and I appreciate that the games start at a beginning level and only increase in difficulty as my son is successful with them. The games are too simple for my 7 year old but a great introduction for the younger set. (I agree with another reviewer that the sound is not terrific--it has a "buzzy quality"--but my son plays the game in the car with the sound off and still enjoys it.)

1.0 out of 5 stars Very hard to hear and understand what they are saying
I cannot understand a word of what they are saying on this game! I think it is terrible. If I cannot hear or understand it, certainly my 3 year old cannot.
