ROBBEN AT HIS BEST,
By deepbluereview "deepbluereview" (SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Blues Collection (Audio CD)
THIS IS A COLLECTION OF 12 SONGS SPANNING A PERIOD FROM 1971 TO 1991 MANY OF WHICH WERE NOT PREVIOUSLY RELEASED OR ARE NO LONGER IN PRINT. BACKING UP ROBBEN ON VARIOUS TRACKS ARE THE CHARLES FORD BAND, CHARLIE MUSSELWHITE, MARK FORD AND JIMMY WITHERSPOON. ALL OF THE SONGS ARE UPBEAT BLUES NUMBERS WHICH LEAN TOWARD JAZZ IN THE STYLE OF JOHN COLTRANE AND MILES DAVIS. THESE SONGS ARE SO GOOD IT WILL MAKE YOU WONDER WHY MOST HAVE NEVER BEEN RELEASED. THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE CD'S AND CERTAINLY RANKS AMONG ROBBEN'S BEST. THE CD DESERVES STRONG CONSIDERATION FROM BLUES FANS. I GIVE IT 5 STARS. IT IS MONEY WELL SPENT, TRY IT YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED.

I can't believe no one's reviewed this yet! Just got it a couple weeks ago, and was amazed. This is a must for any fan of Robben Ford or the blues, or if you just like good guitar playing & live jams. Some of the best parts on this cd are the live tracks where Robben trades licks with his brother Mark (on harp). Some highlights: Excuse my blues - sounds a little rough & raucous at first, but features some of the chunkiest rhythm playing I've ever heard & some awesome guitar/harp interplay. Blue Stu - hear Robben play sax! He could have been a professional sax player but chose to focus on guitar instead. The Cotton Creeper - another great instrumental by the Ford brothers. Mellow Down Easy - Mark Ford sings on this funky number. Pretty Woman - great instrumental version of the old Albert King favorite. I could have written a blurb on each song (they're all good) but you get the idea. This cd is a good example of the different phases of his career, from The Charles Ford Band to Charlie Musselwhite to Jimmy Whitherspoon to the more recent stuff with his own band. Enjoy! |
